What am I missing (leg room)

Post by DCIV »

When searching for a new vehicle I really think the edge ST is where it’s at. But then I see a PHEV escape. That would save a good 1500-2000 bucks a year for me. So I start to look at stats. The edge is a bigger vehicle but it has less leg room? Basically the girls are small and only thing I really care about is their feet having more room. Not them being too close. I feel like I’m missing something?

Edge is bigger because it has more cargo room. Go find a box that's 2 ft by 2 ft by 2 ft. That's your 8 cubic feet of difference.

As far as the leg room goes, you're obsessing over a tenth of an inch. See if you can rent one for a day. Traditional car rental places or Turo. Put your kids in there. See how they fit.
I think about all the things we could have done, all the miracles we could have achieved, if we were all just a little bit better than it turns out we are.

Leg room has nothing to do with cargo room/passenger volume. All 4 of my cars have about the same leg room but cargo and passenger volume between them is insanely different.

My point is, if the leg room is the same and I’m not gonna gain what I want then I would much rather have the escape phev. But I have a way of simplifying things in my head and need thoughts.

Use a caliper and set it to 0.100”, and see what the difference is going to be.

The Edge is going to feel way bigger on the inside because of the extra volume, and there is going to be more leg room in the front too.

Basically think of it as the difference between a Focus and a Fusion.

You also need to consider hip room, head room, and shoulder room for comfort.

Aaron I know you find it funny but what if the bottom of the seats are longer and thus the car seat sits back further. That’s not leg room. But I don’t know what it is.

Leg room has nothing to do with the length of the cushion. It's measured from the joint where the cushion meets the back rest, and from there down to the floor.

There's a 20 page SAE standard that goes way into the details if you're still curious. https://law.resource.org/pub/us/cfr/ibr ... 0.1984.pdf

Or you could just go find one and try it out.

They have the same legroom, but the Edge has more volume, so it will be bigger and more comfortable on the inside. But you’re gonna do what you want to do anyway, so it really doesn’t matter what we think. You’ve already sold yourself on getting the PHEV and are now looking for any excuse to not get the edge. So just get the Escape and be done.

Eh. I’ve been pretty jason and chris on this. Remember when I wanted a pure electric? I like a car. I like small vehicles to daily. Always have. Toyota Corolla, two Toyota celicas, Honda accord…. So if I can get a smaller vehicle with same rear room why wouldn’t I? I can’t take anyone back there but the girls. They need more room. I wouldn’t get them anymore room getting the edge.

Hell I’ve been looking at 2018-2020 wrx's, but they have even less room so I havnt even mentioned them.

The only one that’s still in the list is the Honda crv. So slow and boring, but if we bought almost new it could be my oldest first car. And would be perfect for that. Minus me wanting to hate life.

Again, you are only looking at leg room, not the rest of the dimensions. There is going to be more room in the back of an Edge overall, plain and simple. Also to say you can't take anyone back there besides your daughters because of the legroom is dumb honestly. I took 4 adults on a 4.5 hour each way trip in my RS not long after I got it. We did just fine. But like I said, you've already sold yourself on small vehicle, so stop trying to get us to justify your desire for a smaller car, get the Escape PHEV, and be done with it.
