Re: AEM Infinity 506 in a 3000GT
Installed the Fluidampr balancer today, which was kind of a PITA since I couldn't find my crank holding tool. Impact got the stock one off, and put the new one on. Also got the small Fuelab FPR installed and set to base pressure of 45 psi. Found a small coolant leak, and need some hose to properly fix it. It is actually for the rear turbo coolant line (which isn't connected to the turbo) - and is plugged at the end. Clamp must've bit into the rubber, so it is leaking there. Might as well get that fixed while the plenum is still off.
Once that's done and the intake pieces back on, then I can try to start it up for the first time with the Infinity.
I think I'm going to 3D print a bracket for the boost solenoid and FPR. I need to mount that with rubber isolators somehow.

Re: AEM Infinity 506 in a 3000GT
It has been a while, since I've been busy with work and other things. Today I decided to get everything back together to prepare for the Upper Midwest Gathering.
Got the upper intake pieces all back on, fuel system parts, sensors, etc. I had set the base timing with the Fluidampr pulley on before, so decided to just hook up the coils and go for it. Cranked for about 3 seconds and started right up. Idle is a little funky, but it is at 10:1 AFR at idle, so no surprise there. I just started it up while still on the lift to check for leaks and such. No leaks, but it feels/sounds like it is maybe missing on a cylinder. My guess is that the process of setting base timing with the fuel pump disabled may have still pumped some residual fuel into the cylinders and maybe fouled a plug.
I'll have to figure that out, and do some tuning on the Infinity - but I'm impressed with how easily it started up. Basically I just input all my engine parameters (3.5L, 6 cylinder, firing order, wasted spark, injector size, base fuel pressure, and set up a VE map where I think I just put 90% everywhere or something like that (I haven't hooked the laptop up yet today) and it runs and revs fine through the RPM range other than being rich and the misfire. It probably would've taken at least a few hours of tuning time for me to get that far on the old Series 2 AEM.
I have had zero time to work on my graphical display gauges, so right now I just have an AEM AEMnet gauge in the center vent location. That's enough for me to be able to see the vital parameters. Oil pressure, fuel pressure, MAP, etc. is working. Ethanol sensor apparently isn't working as it says "0" and should probably be somewhere around 10% based on the last fuel I put in it.
I want to take the front bumper off to put in the '99 foglights, but I'm still waiting on a front-mount oil cooler from Hans. I'd really like to have that done before UMG so the car is "complete".

Re: AEM Infinity 506 in a 3000GT
I finally had a little time to spend on the car again. I depinned the +12v leads to the IAC, as the Infinity doesn't drive it the same way. Not sure my IAC is actually doing anything, so hopefully I didn't hurt the Infinity.
Leaning it out got rid of the bad misfire, so that's good. Bringing it up to operating temp and giving it some revs, unfortunately, popped off the lower radiator hose. I guess somewhere along the line I didn't get that clamp tightened or it isn't in the right position or something. It puked out all the coolant, so I have a mess to clean up and need to get some more coolant. Yay.
Sounded good up until the coolant issue...

Re: AEM Infinity 506 in a 3000GT
Got a coolant pressure tester and found the leak. Clamp started biting through the upper coolant hose. New hose, new clamp, full of coolant and good to go.
Brought it up to temp and noticed no radiator fans. 10 minutes later after figuring out which lowside output I connected the fans to, and setting the parameters up in the Infinity and I have fans again. Noticed that the AC doesn't come on, so have to figure out how I set up the AC trigger input. Pretty sure I have the AC clutch set up right in the Infinity, but it isn't seeing the command trigger to actually engage the clutch.
My new "black" IAC doesn't work. My old tan one does, but I suppose I'll order a new black one just to have a new one in there. 3SX, I guess for that.
During initial tuning, it was running rich around 10:1 and I got a pretty loud backfire. Well today I saw something behind the car and it blew out a section of the cat material from my new high-flow cat. So I guess I'll need a new cat too... Or just let it hollow itself out and use it as a test pipe. Sounds freaking awesome the way it is set up right now. UMG is right around the corner now.
Should be driving/tuning it soon.
Oh, also have a set of '99 fogs that have to go on. STILL waiting for that damn front-mount oil cooler from Hans. >sigh< . Might have to get desperate and fab some shit up with parts I have laying around the garage. Shouldn't be this hard to get a FMOC.

Front bumper back off now. '99 fogs mounted up. Working on mounting for the front-mount oil cooler (Setrab core). '99 intercooler ducts and radiator shroud going on also.
Fogs don't work, but wondering if I did something strange with them when I took them off (remove fuse somewhere?). I dunno...
Dumbass in a minivan tried to take me out in the Stingray today. Three left turn lanes, him in the middle and me on the outside and he tried to go right over me after the apex. Yes, three left turn lanes - my city is stupid.

No, luckily I still have good reflexes and slid out of the way to the side and pounded the brakes and he missed and the guy behind me didn't hit me either. I'd guess he saw what the minivan was doing and started braking a bit before I did. No harm done, but that sucked.

We have quite a few triple left turn lanes around here... Always uncomfortable when you're the one in the middle of the 3.

Lot of doubles out here. Can't think of any triples off the top of my head. Do see people cross the lines all the time though.

Re: AEM Infinity 506 in a 3000GT
I tend to have more issues with a specific couple of double lefts than the triple lefts. Statically speaking you're more likely to be involved on a collision at a triple than a double though.

Perfect timing for my left hand turn lane thread. Funny how your car and my truck (Stingray and F250) are very noticeable cars when in traffic, yet the other party didnt see either of us. I really could have F'd up the guy in the sedans day.

Re: AEM Infinity 506 in a 3000GT
Last night I had like 10 minutes to work on it, so I set up the other wideband on AEMnet channel 2 so I now have real dual widebands coming in via AEMnet. Looks like the two banks are right about dead-on with each other so far, so no strange fuel trims bank-to-bank, so that's good. Might change under higher load, but in the idle/rev portions of the map it looks good.
Today I should be working on it most of the day. Have to pick up some more distilled water, and see if Fleet Farm has some new trailer tires that'll fit my trailer. Tires are like 15 years old and need to be replaced if I end up trailering out to Wisconsin Dells and/or the Shootout this year.
Today's crap:

Today's crap:
- Replace dead IAC
- Try to rig up my FMOC that I'm now making myself
- Intercooler/radiator ducting
- Put the front bumper back on
- Pull the high-flow cat and see how damaged it is (gut or just go with it for now)
- Raining today, so no tuning.

- Maybe tuning tomorrow, but I have to work at the range for 3 hours

Re: AEM Infinity 506 in a 3000GT
Got the IAC replaced, still no idle control. I think I must've damaged the IAC drivers when I had +12v still connected to the IAC connector. The Infinity drives it bi-polar, so you have to remove the +12v pins from the harness. Guess I'll be getting in touch with AEM support on Monday morning to see what they think.
Got the radiator shroud in, and the '99 coolant overflow bottle fitted in there properly. Had to flip my mounting bracket upside-down and make a few tweaks, but it ended up fitting nicely. '99 intercooler shrouds also look like they will fit well with my huge side-mount intercoolers.
More setup on the Infinity on the lift. Got the gear ratio detection set up, so logs will indicate the proper gear the car is in. Also did some tuning in the low-load cells for VE. The Infinity logs an extra item called "New VE" which actually tells you what it thinks the VE should be in a particular cell based on the wideband readings and what the error is. Very cool.
No more coolant leaks. Slight oil leak from the rear turbo oil return flange. Might have to just re-do it with some gasket sealant.
Not quite sure what I'm going to do about the FMOC. Might leave it as-is with the SMOC until after the UMG. Not really feeling like screwing around with that right now.

Matt what did you do about the 99 tank not having a level sensor? I just got one myself and don't know if I should just pull the bulb from the cluster, or do something else.

I will probably pull the bulb.

Re: AEM Infinity 506 in a 3000GT
Sounds like a plan. I have to pull the cluster to pull the ABS bulb. I never knew there was even an ABS bulb in my SOHC cluster until it went in this other car. I don't know why it even has a bulb being the SOHC's never had ABS.
