Progress update for today.

Got the muffler cut down and mocked up into place. It actually fits in the space fairly well. I just need to pick up a coupler and figure out a way to rig up a hanger.

I think I've got the lighting issue solved. Sort of. It looks like a combination of two things. The contacts in the light housings are old and corroded. I think that caused the old style flasher module to not work correctly, so someone replaced it with a cheap POS. The new flasher didn't work very well even with the cleaned up contacts. I reconnected the factory flasher and it worked better, but it was still kind of lazy. I'll pick up a load independent flasher when I go to the store tomorrow.

These taillight housings are literally crumbling in my hands while I work on them. The plastic is trashed. I've got a brand new reproduction set coming from Lithuania of all places, but it'll be a while before they get here. Hopefully these will hold together in the meantime.

The horn also works. I think the pad in the steering wheel is just deteriorated. My pickup had the same problem. It's an easy fix.

You care more about your beater than I care about my daily.

I’ve had a busted front turn light for over a year....no real care on replacing it.

This beater will be his daily once the weather turns. Hes getting everything operable so that hes safe and doesn't get stranded.

Then the mod itch with surface. Like that steering wheel. Mine is in terrible shape and ive already got several ideas.

MO has state safety inspections. They're kind of a joke, but I'd want my lights working regardless.

Saw a mowing crew today. One of the mowers stayed on the mower on an open trailer smoking...instead of riding in the truck with the others. There was room
In the truck, you could see, this was also going 60mph.

Crazy ass weekend. I got up early Saturday and busted ass to get this thing reassembled. Brakes were all done, exhaust is buttoned up, albeit temporarily. All the lighting is fixed. Put a new weatherpack connector on the fuel pump. There were still a couple problems, but I thought everything was good enough for now. It was running and stopping great now that I'd bled out the brakes and fixed a couple of crossed ignition wires.

I still had almost an hour to go down the street and get the stupid inspection at the Valvoline shop.

So I get there, and they tell me the inspector had to leave early Vira had gone ahead to get an oil change on her Mazda, and she checked before I left. The situation changed in the 15 minutes it took me to finish the last couple things.

That wasn't even the worst thing. The damn truck wouldn't restart after I shut it off. It's like the battery was dead. I ran home, grabbed the jumper pack (Valvoline didn't have one ) and that didn't work either. WTF. Tried to jump it off the mazda. Still nothing. Wasn't even getting enough power to roll up the driver's window.

Finally I swapped out the battery with the one from the pickup. I don't know if it was a fluke or what, but it finally started. Got it back home, shut it off, then restarted it again 5 minutes later like nothing was ever wrong.

I cleaned the hell out of the battery connections, checked all the relevant ground wires, and tested the ignition switch. It showed some high resistance in certain positions, so I took it apart and cleaned it. I'm going to replace it anyway, but it will hopefully be ok for now.

I am beyond stressed out about this.

I don't see nearly as many obviously unsafe wrecks being driven around here as I did when I lived in Michigan. The inspections are annoying, but they do seem to serve a purpose.

As a fireman who goes on a good amount of wrecks I would like to say the number one reason for them is lack of paying attention. Plain and simple. I don’t go in near as many DUI’s as I would have thoughts. I don’t go on near as many dangerous driving as I would have thoughts. And I have had just as few of unsafe vehicles as the previous two. Maybe we don’t rust out like MI? Don’t get me wrong, I’ve bad some unsafe ones but not enough for me ever to think things need to change.

That is bogus! Shutting down shop before posted work hours? I hate places that do that. You going in today to get it inspected?

Anyways sounds like you and I had a similar weekend. Ill update my thread in a little bit with what all went down with me.
