For some reason, Ryan just won't jack up his car and look... I already mentioned all this to him yesterday when he called.
Well I figured out that since I removed the charcoal canister, the pump won't know when to shut off - that's the charcoal canister's job. Thanks Karla for that realization.
I hope your joking

I've got a gas tank sitting in the garage if you want to come pick it up. I really just want to get it out of my way.

The canister is there to suck the vapors out of the tank

Is it still leaking? I'm just speculating, but since the auto-shut off didn't work, the fuel over flowed, and ran down the drain tube in the filler neck, or came out the overfill valve on the tank.

quickie on gas pump auto shut off.
that's what I thought, but i suspected a dual purpose of some sort?

how does the pump know to shut off, then? I've searched through wiki and howstuffworks and can't find anything. :(

The car was on while filling up, would that matter?
The pump shuts off because of a valve in the nozzle. Charcoal canister is definitely to suck up fuel vapor so you don't smell that shit on a hot day.
