the fuel pump is down in the tank, but it can be taken out from the top...

so you are saying that the fuel spilled outside the car or inside the walls of the car?

is your fuel asembly well seal/screw in tight... if you overfill the tank and the asembly is not tight, it could leak from there...

from the top of the tank thats the assembly.. its really the only place it could leak from unless you have bad fuel lines... unless is the tube that goes from the side of the car to the tank... but I never hear of them ever leaking...

Isn't there a vent pipe at the top of the fill pipe?

If not it's probably the fuel pump assembly...they're pretty bad about rotting out.

Yea, that thing is the poster child for rust haha. There isn't enough lubrication in the world to break loose all of that rust.

Check your fill pipe going from the tank to the gas door. Those tend to rot out after a while. I don't remember if any bolts broke off while doing the fuel pump. I wouldn't doubt that atleast one of them broke off. There is a big vent at the top of the tank too.

It vents out towards the front passenger side of the tank. I've never really had the gas spill out like that... just out the filler hole.

Just a simple vent with a tube going towards the ground.
Even if that happened, why would gas spill from anywhere but out the fill pipe? How could it?
well using basic physics, the fill pipe is the highest point, if there is any point for it to leak out before then, that's where it's going to come out.

Not trying to be insulting, either I'm confused, or it's overly simple.

Keep us updated.
