My truck felt pretty good on the 31s, but it has a manual transmission and it's several hundred pounds lighter.

Just ordered front pads and rotors from Rock Auto. Should be here Thursday. The muffler and any electrical stuff I should be able to get locally. I might just go hack a muffler off a junkyard car. There's an SOHC 3000GT nearby

Do the 2nd gen caliper swap. It’s quite noticeable. You go from single pot to two and gain a thicker rotor. With bigger wheels you will need the added clamping force.

Tonight I spent some time on the fuel pump wiring. The harness seems to be intact. After testing continuity at a bunch of points, and checking the MFI relay, I disconnected the switched hotwire and hooked everything back up the way it's supposed to be. The truck ran for a few minutes.

I think the hotwire was done to correct an intermittent problem. The muffler is smashed and venting hot exhaust right near the rear body wiring harness. The corrugated wire loom is melted. It's in a bad place, so I couldn't see if there was more damage. This might explain the problem with the intermittent brake lights and the dead fuel gauge. I'm going to try to pull the whole thing out of the truck so I can unwrap it and check for damage.

While I was under there, I also got a better look at the rust. It's significant. Not unsafe, but it needs to be dealt with if I keep this truck longer than a few months. It definitely makes me appreciate my pickup more.

Por15. You can get it at autozone. Spray it on the rust and it stops the rust and is paint so it doesn’t start again. Go. To. Town. Then don’t worry about it for winter. Get the truck going. Sell this thing, or scrap it, or give it to someone in need.

I got the rear chassis harness out tonight. It wasn't too bad. The corrugated loom is damaged, but as best I can tell, the harness itself is ok I hooked up my multimeter and bent, twisted, and shoved that harness all over the place, and I never had problems with continuity to either the fuel pump or level sender.

So I'm going to replace the fuel pump connector with a 2 pin weatherpack just because the locking tab is broken, and I'm going to add some heat shield sleeve where it passes the muffler. Other than that, I guess I'll just have to trust it.

I have two rust spots on the XJ i need to take care of eventually. One under the drivers side back door and one behind the passengers side rear bumper endcap - posted a pic of that monstrosity in my Jeep thread. More than likely I will take an angle grinder to it and cut it out and put something over it. Not sure what yet though.
