Worked on the Monti a little this weekend. The stock radio (top pictured) hasnt worked since I bought it, so i got to looking at what I had lying around. I wanted to use the 95 Montero SR radio from my donor car (pictured just below the stock one), but its security code locked me out. When I pulled it, a 4 digit # was already written on top. I ran it again on Mitsu's site and got another set of numbers based on my VIN. Well neither worked. :(

Image

Well i had almost forgotten about my 93 radio I found a couple years back. Had to buy two separate harnesses to bridge the 89 to early 90's pin connector gap.

Installed and working. Now to start swapping out garbage 30 year old speakers.

Yea, maybe its the purest in me, but aftermarket radios can really look tacky. They also dont always connect up right, or are made to work well with speaker components.

That reminds me. This radio can connect to a CD changer. My 95 SR has one, so im contemplating swapping it over as well. Not certain if its a straight forward swap though.

I installed a very cheap Bluetoooth radio that I wasn't charged for on one of my junkyard visits. It works fine :p

Finally had enough of my eye sore rear bumper, so i tackled it. Doesn't it look horrid?

Image

Somehow the nasty light brown oxidation got on a small part of the frame as well. Yuck. Time for some sandpaper and paint.

Image

The bumper was much worse to work on though. The oxidation was light, but a flapper wheel would have been fine, but that rust went a few mm deep. Well its not perfect, but its better than it was. 30 coats later of semi gloss...

Image

You may also notice I have a new hitch too. Found it in Carson City a couple weeks back, turns out they are a little hard to come by. I just like that I can swap out receivers.

Took a week off work and headed to visit my family in Idaho as well as the wifes in Colorado. I specifically wanted to drag the Montero behind me, so I could register it there. No smog, and cheap registration that i can pay 2 years in advance. Once there I decided to take her off the dolly and have a little fun.

Unhooked.

First real time driving it at speed. New tires felt solid.

Making our way out to the family farm through some dirt roads

Arrived with all 3 of us in the cab. Back seat isnt great for a car seat, but it is doable. Had to put my kid in through the back door. lol.
Image

She did well on all the soft dirt and mountains/hills. Had to go in to 4 low for several steep passes.

Picture of my dads truck I gave him as well as the Monti. Had a lot of fun blazing trails that day.

Even my little boy got to get in on the action and steer for a good chunk of the trip. lol.

Those wheels and tires look huge on that, but it looks like you had a good time!

They are pretty big, but I like that. I think they are somewhere between 33's and 35's. I think they will look better once I do a lift on the suspension first and possibly body.
