Tell me why a salvage McLaren is a bad idea. SHOW YOUR WORK.

Post by Jeff V. »

This keeps coming up, so let's hash it out once and for all.

Tell me why I shouldn't get into a salvaged McLaren. Let's use this one for an example. It sold for $42k today. Engine runs and at least some of the electronics still work. Clean retail value is $90-110.

I've got this one on my watch list too. I think clean retail on that is ~$150k.

If you're going to tell me I'm wrong, then tell me why. Don't just say "maintenance is expensive" or "they're not reliable". Give real world examples. Show your damn work.
I think about all the things we could have done, all the miracles we could have achieved, if we were all just a little bit better than it turns out we are.

Honestly I'm with Cooperdoodles. If you have the money, time, know how, why not? You can't take it with you and you only live once. As long as it doesn't turn into another project that you give up on, do it.

Are you into it for life, or does resale value matter? Was it only hail damage? I cant see much more going on.

I know nothing about maintenance or parts availability on these, but if you are handy then that could be a plus. Other than that what would insurance cost?

Didn't Tavarish have all kinds of problems getting parts for his 760LT, and people at McLaren flat out refusing to help him? Maybe it would be different on one of their "entry-level" cars, but I feel like if a major YouTube start can't get support, why would they be willing to help anyone?

If none of that applies, then I don't really have an argument

What did Matt say?! It seemed well worded and cautionary. That’s prob why I didn’t remember it lol.

The stuff Tavarish had problems with was mostly 675LT specific body stuff. They only built 500 of those. He ended up getting a lot of it used anyway.

There's companies that make aftermarket copies if you don't care about authenticity. I could get a whole kit to make a 12C look like a 650S or 675LT if I wanted. They're all the same chassis.

Then I can't argue against it :)

Just let me know what I can do to help :D

My GS isn't going anywhere for a while. The salvage supercar market is just as overheated as the regular market. I want things to calm down a bit.

But in the meantime, we can talk about hypotheticals. There's been too much pickup truck talk around here lately :p
