I just don't know what kind of resale I would be looking at either, and that is a BIG truck.

Are those the v10’s that had rear cyl issues?

Nah they are pretty solid, especially the 3V version like that one should be.

Keep going back to that 02 white 8.1. Asking 9k obo. Wife will be in the area tomorrow. Wonder if she would go look at it for me.

Re: Going to need a tow/haul rig
My biggest concern is parts availability for the 8.1. Much easier to find for 6.0, but that Allison tranny is so much better than the 4l80e

Re: Going to need a tow/haul rig
It's not a common engine but I can't imagine it's that hard to get parts for. If she's there might as well see if she can swing by and look
Re: Going to need a tow/haul rig
Parts are harder but as long as you arnt running to autozone to fix it then you should be okay. I would think. Or….just don’t keep it long enough to find out. Lol

They made a crap ton of 8.1s for things like motorhomes. Parts won't be that hard to find.

Few years ago I needed a cam sensor for one. Got one of the last 2 in the country. GM parts guy said parts are problematic for them.

That's my concern. Allison vs easiness of 6.0

Keep looking at the red dmax as well. Something about it keeps drawing me to it, but I know I should avoid diesel if I can.

2wd.
Still seems cheap but more believable. If the seller has a clean title in his name I wouldn't be concerned. If he's flipping it...I would do the transaction at the DMV only.

Re: Going to need a tow/haul rig
I still think I will go gasser though in the end.
The more I think about it the more I am leaning towards the 2500 6.0/4l80e to the simplicity of it.
Towing capacity and payload are the same, biggest difference is mountain driving with a load it seems. Allison wins hands down, but not like I will be doing max load all the time.
Don't know enough about fords, but anything similar to the reliability of the 6.0/4l80e combo that can be had for under $10k?

I also keep going back and looking at that old 96 F250 with the 7.3.
I hate myself.
