TOYOTA OUTSELLS GM AGAIN.

Post by Chris95RT »

TOYOTA OUTSELLS GM AGAIN.

Toyota Motor Corp.,
which toppled General Motors Corp. as the world’s best-selling
OEM in the first quarter, did it again for the April-June
period by posting an any-quarter record $54.7 billion in
revenue vs. $54.5 billion for GM.
Toyota also netted an all-time record $4.1 billion in profits
for the quarter, up one-third from the year-before period.
Results were boosted by about $840 million generated by
the weak yen, and the company says cost-cutting efforts
partly offset the higher price of raw materials.
Demand for Toyota’s vehicles grew by 3% to 2.1 million
units during the quarter. Unit sales growth in North America
was only 2%, but sales rose 8% in Europe and 15% in Asia.
Toyota sold 4.72 million cars and trucks through the first
half of the year—about 50,000 more than GM did.

In unrelated news, Cerebus appoints ex-Home Depot exec as the new Chairman and LaSorda steps down to #2.

Also Ridenour quit.

That is all.

*yawn*

Customers are idiots.

Some magazine did an interesting little test. They took a few cars out to have the clueless masses review them....then they switched the manufacturers badges and had another group review them.

The Chevy Cobalt got something like a 6.5.

That exact same Cobalt got an 8 when it had a Toyota badge glued to the front.

People are stupid.

The American companies are building good cars these days. The problem is getting the blinded masses to actually understand this is not the 70s any more, and the crap cars from that era are dead and buried.

It's fucking maddening. The Saturn Aura wins car of the year as voted by 29 automotive jourlanists, and GM still can't sell the thing because the public is hooked on that ugly, bland transportation appliance (Camry) that Toyota has been churning out.
I think about all the things we could have done, all the miracles we could have achieved, if we were all just a little bit better than it turns out we are.

This is going to become the norm from now on. For at least a few more years ToMoCo will be the #1 bestest auto company from the land of the rising sun while GM will stay at #2. I think we'll see a change in about 10 years or so when the crappy cars that Toyota is currently making come back and bite them and the public finally sees that GM has been making quality cars for the first time since the 70's. Until then, I see no change in site to the current auto company hierarchy.

Oh well, We're #2! We're #2!

For me it's more than just quality. So many of the American car companies are in the news, and very little of it is good news.
Plants closing, huge layoffs, companies being bought/sold, switching hands, not taking care of retiree benefits, etc. In my mind, it creates an uncomfortable feeling..if these companies can't even take care of themselves, what makes me think they can build a car? I know that's a far stretch, but most folks have limited understanding (like myself) about the car industry. Even if GM isn't having these problem, they're an "American car company" and every bad-news story starts out with the same slogan "American car company so-and-so in trouble again.." yadda yadda.

If Toyota, Honda, etc are having these kinds of problems (layoffs, etc), then they hide it well.

Actualy havn't people been a little angry with Japan and them keeping the yen so low? Its good economics, as long as you play it safe.

Its not just GM, Ford got most improved on JD power's report. Did you hear much about that, NO. But you are hearing about how they're having a record setting amount of recalls. Chrysler's cars are nice too, its just annoying to hear all this crap from the sheep.

Its a cycle though, in 5-6 years things will be a lot more equal because the domestics are going to get in gear to stop Toyota, and Toyota will get a little more lax. You can't keep in the lead forever. :D

Do you have that article Jeff?

Or the American media just loves to beat up on the domestic OEMs. I remember working out a few weeks ago back before the whole Chrysler/Cerebus deal, and Dateline or 20/20 had a special segment on automotive. They started the segment by show casing:

"DOMESTIC OEM's STOCK PRICES ARE DOWN!" And followed up by showing each of them down 10c to a dollar per share. And then contrasted that by showing forigen ones up 10c to a dollar.

Its reduclous, something as simple as market flux warrents a negative story portrayed on national news, its a wonder why everyone thinks American quality = crap.

Its already starting,

Even though I'm on the American side, I can't say the lost-production story fits in the scenario. It was caused by an earthquake..a random event..not worker strikes, layoffs, or poor marketing, etc.
No matter how well prepared you are, earthquakes will fuck you up :D

I could recite my views on the media again, but i don't wanna waste your time :p
Doom & Gloom sells (generates ratings). The media knows this.
So anything that casts a bad light on America will get ratings.

Which is quite ironic isn't it? We'll cast ToMoCo and Honda as God's gift to the automotive world (did you hear anything about how they had more recalls last year than the big 3 combined?), yet their hometown (ok, country) companies can do absolutely no right in the media. The term "Teflon Kimono" fits the situation very well.
