Vira and I were in Las Vegas last weekend, and we decided to do something fun before the rest of our friends showed up. We'd been wanting to get out of town to see Red Rock Canyon for a while, so we started to look through interesting cars to rent.

We came down to 3 choices, mostly based on price.

C8 Corvette
BMW Z4
Hummer EV

We came down to the Hummer EV because it was too cold and windy to have the top down in either of the convertibles, and we could have a few laughs by surprising our friends by picking them up at the airport.

I'm only going to say this about the rental experience. Before you even go to the exotic rental place, find out what the actual 'out the door' price will be. They will absolutely kill you on extra fees. I was ready to walk out the door and the guy dropped some of the fees, but it was still over double what was listed on their web page. I can only imagine how bad it would have been with one of their exotic cars.

BTW, fuck Turo too. Went through all their hoops to sign up only to be told on the last screen I didn't meet the requirements to rent a C8. Waited 25 minutes trying to get an answer out of their support before giving up and moving on to the Hummer.

Anyway, on to the truck.





It's every bit as ridiculous as they say. Everything about it is over the top.

This was the 3X trim, so it had
3 motors
~800 hp
9200 lbs
~319 miles of range

It rode nice for the ride out to Red Rock Canyon. The suspension is way too soft for the weight and power though. I couldn't find enough space to really get on it, but the few little sprints I did really unloaded the front end and made the steering feel sketchy. It didn't feel like 800 hp either, but maybe that's because I wasn't being aggressive enough with the go pedal.

We definitely didn't try the WTF (Watts to Freedom ) launch mode and we didn't find the Crab Walk menu until it was too late to try it. Vira asked ChatGPT, and it promptly made up some shit we couldn't find, so for most of the time we had it we just assumed it wasn't on this model.

The regular four wheel steering was amazing. I was really worried about parking this thing because it's so damn big, but it wasn't hard at all. When we dropped our friends off at The Cosmopolitan, I had to maneuver it through their very cramped and twisty underground drop off area. I was worried about someone else hitting us, but other than that, it was easy.

We both really loved the interior. I've loved the looks of this thing inside and out since it was launched. With that said, it doesn't feel like a $100,000+ experience. Now that they're crashing below 60k, it starts to get a whole lot more interesting.

It'd be really interesting to see how hard it is to get the roof off on a nicer day. I've heard the roof panels are heavy and awkward to get stored in the frunk.

Would I buy one? No. Am I glad it exists? Yes.

I'm glad you had fun renting it. I agree Turo blows they're all just fly by night rental car companies now and the extra fees and shit are ridiculous. Most credit cards won't cover them cause it's not an actual rental car and their included coverage is basically useless if you actually need it.

i attempted turo once and when i asked about how to pick up the car the day before, he said it had been wrecked and was unavailable. He didnt cancel the reservation because it would have reflected poorly on his ratings. I would have probably been fucked had i not messaged him to ask about it. He refused to cancel it so i had to call turo support and have them cancel it.

i had the exact same scenario the one time i tried to use turo. after getting off the chat with support i rechecked and the car was no longer listed. turo sucks.

luckily i had a gut feeling about it and had reserved a car at budget the night before.

Glad you got to test drive one. They seemed like neat tech.

Think the owner installed enough forward facing lights?

A c8 seems way too much for you. Lol
