Sti build….

Post by tabasco122 »

STI spun a bearing (i assume) this week, so im going to use this space to document this shit.

I still dont understand how this happened exactly, but the current theory is a fucking weird ass series of coincidences, along with some classic subaru oil consumption.

2013 STI we have had for about 4 years now
Sometime last week victorias car threw a code for the secondary air system. $1200 to replace both solenoids. Fuck that, ill buy $40 block off plates and delete it. Work on that this week, somehow while its in the air it decides to drop the entirety of the power steering reservoir on the ground. Leak is right from the top of the rack where the shaft goes in. So i finish up, refill the res, bleed it, go for a light test drive. Boost leak from the turbo outlet hose and an exhaust leak rattle, so i fix both of those, go for another test drive, and hear a light tapping. Remove power steering belt thinking the pump died or something, and no change. Check the oil and its more than a quart low, so I drain the oil and get sparklies. Welp, time for a shortblock. Going to end up doing a modest build and take care of all the shit that needs to be done to get it reliable so hopefully this doesnt happen again. It only has 53k miles on it, but everyone knows that the ej25 is a time bomb. Not a car that we want to ever really get rid of because its victorias first fun car.

Plans are

Outfront V3 Ultra block (homie hook up, 0 miles and hes tossing in some ARP headstuds and shipping for $4500)
Blouch Dom 1.5 XTR (decent responsive stock location turbo upgrade, same friend as the block, $700 but will pay $400 or so to have it rebuilt and inspected by blouch)
ID1050 injectors (same friend, $300)
walboro 255 ($100)
ETS Topmount ($700)
tgv deletes ($150)
Downpipe ($400-600)
Up Pipe ($270)
SMY gauge pod ($130)
WB O2 ($200)
boost gauge? idk
IAG oiling kit (pan and pickup, $629)
IAG stage 2 oil pump ($449)
IAG AOS or dual catch can setup ($439 or like, $100)
Aisin Timing belt kit ($270)
CSF radiator ($600)
3 port bcs ($100)

This is basically a wish list/way to keep track, some of the items are definitely happening, some may come later, but at minimum im going to need the block and supporting. probably have it back up and running for spring, but ill probably be driving the forester till then while she drives the lexus. We were planning on getting a decent gas mileage car soon anyway, so if need be we will just pick something else up.

ib4 fill it with lucas and find a sucker dealership

So you don’t know why it actually spun? How many miles?

Skip the up pipe and save the money offers zero performance benefits on the STi.

The heat shield on mine has busted welds and I’d rather replace it with something that has a better flex section than stock.

I still wouldn't bother there's no normal flex in that spot anyways

There’s a flex on mine and I’m not positive it’s leaking but if it moved enough to break the welds on the heatshield…

Just gonna throw this out there. Is there not a short block you can buy from a Ray type person, throw it in and just use the car in a weekend of wrenching?

Yeah, I can get an iag built shortblock for about $3700, or a stock replacement block from Subaru for about $2200 that would be subject to the same reliability (or slightly more reliable since that’s the newer block) but once you figure in taxes and shipping and stuff, it’s pretty damn close to what I’m getting this closed deck for.

I'd recommend the RA short block it's been shown to be very reliable. There's a long back order currently though.

Definitely considered it, but the outfront closed deck is a way better value.

Revisiting this soon. That block is no longer available from my buddy so idk if i should go with a RA block and enjoy it stockish, or go for a basic IAG block. Probably going to go over this list and adjust some things down.

Leaning towards going with a stock block with drop in pistons. Almost a grand cheaper and i dont see myself going for 500whp in the car, maybe 400 or so max with a slightly larger turbo, but not till later.
