Non-mechanic tries to repair NJ flood Tesla

I've only just started reading this, but already it's not going well. He hooked up the 12V battery before doing basically anything else, and 'heard a snap, followed by the smell of burning electronics". Then the drivers seat was reclined into a really odd position. He has to remove it to get to the some of the electronics. But he can't because the seat tracks are rusted solid.
The car is basically a 4 wheeled computer, and he thought he was going to fix it up after a saltwater flood? WTF was he thinking?
Even I'm not that nuts.

Not your average barn find. That is equivalent to tinkering with your homes electrical box. Not worth the shock or heartache.

I'm mostly skimming it. I've been skipping a lot of the short chatter posts.

34 pages in, and he finally opened the high voltage battery pack.
Looks like his true goal was to buy this car as a clean donor chassis, and then swap over all the electrical bits from a smashed car. Depending on the costs of the auction cars, it might be a cheap way to get into a Tesla.
The bigger problem seems to be Tesla themselves. They won't sell certain critical parts to repair shops, they won't do any work on your car unless you pay for an expensive re-certification, and this is the worst part.....they'll remotely log into your car and disable access to the 3G/LTE network AND disable supercharging functions. They actually disable certain parts of your car via software settings. It even blocks access to 3rd party chargers that have absolutely nothing to do with Tesla. That's some seriously shady shit.

Not sure what that guy was thinking... Or smoking...
I predict much more smoking in the near future. Then flames. Then death.

I hope he doesn't have this thing stored in a garage or near combustible material. Yikes.
Risk Taker Extreme.

There's apparently more than one person crazy enough to try fixing these things in their back yard.
The other two examples I've seen are more typical collision repairs. I still can't figure out how this is even remotely cost effective as a DIY project. Especially given Tesla's blacklisting of any cars not repaired and blessed by their expensive, chosen repair shops.
The flood guy bought a smashed P85 (not the D) for <$16k. I've got no clue what a good, used P85 goes for, even with a salvage title.

I was working late last night, and finished the thread. He's not even close to done, but it took some interesting turns.
He got the smashed P85 donor for $14k, and has already recouped $8k selling usable parts from the original flood car. Pretty much the only parts of the flood car that are being kept is the actual body, and some trivial things like window motors which were well above the water line.
This guy is way more nuts than I am, and I'm not even talking about trying to repair a Tesla in the first place. He had the flood car at his house, and the smashed at a friend's warehouse an hour away. There were random people from the Tesla board meeting him at this warehouse to help him strip it. He was making trips to strip the P85 because his wife wouldn't let him keep it at home. He doesn't have a back yard and his neighbors are not tolerant of things like that being visible in the driveway.
Finally, the warehouse's owner said the P85 had to go, within 24 hours. The suspension subframes and the 1300lb battery had already been removed, and so suddenly he has to move all of that AND the remains of the car into his wife's spot in the garage, with the agreement that it'll be gone within 2 weeks. All this with a Toyota Tacoma.
It doesn't matter if it's an electric car or not. The logistics of this are staggering. And for what? He might come in at %50 of what a clean, non-salvaged P85 goes for, but he'll still have a salvage titled mishmash that's been blacklisted by Tesla for any future service or parts.
After reading the shit Tesla pulls with regards to repair work, and remotely fucking around with customer cars, I'd never own one of their cars in any condition. But especially not a damaged one.

If you read the thread, it sounds like she's actually pretty pissed about the whole thing...

I totally understand why Tesla would blacklist you from using their supercharging network if you fuck with their electronics, same with the body. It's all about the HV stuff, they do not want you messing with it because you could die multiple times by being stupid. Can you imagine someone making modifications to the undertray?! Yeikes!
You could not pay me enough to fuck with a HV DC battery pack and traction motor drives, especially with corroded connectors, etc. It's cool he's doing this, from a tinkerer standpoint, but from an OEM standpoint there was a lot of engineering that goes into both the software and hardware to get it to reliably operate (so the battery doesn't explode, you don't shock yourself, etc) and when you have people who don't understand all the edge cases fucking with that- you open yourself up to a bad time.
So Tesla locking that stuff down is a total CYA move.

yeah, I can't blame Tesla at all in this matter. Look at the people who've been hurt by a cell phone battery...
It won't be long before shade tree mechanics are a thing of the past. Just look at how John Deere is operating these days.
