Ive been looking at these lately and am tempted to purchase this one in particular. 1990 with 150k miles, 4x4, Cali truck for $1500.



I didnt know that they had a 6g72 version from 90-94 (only 4x4's). Im tempted to run it for a bit, but ultimately pull the motor an install either a 3.0 TT, 3.5, or 3.8 variant into it using either a montero ecu and wiring harness, or a TT one.

Am I crazy, or is this a fun project?

I say if you have the time, money, and know how, then why not?

Yeah. That's the 75 MIVEC that only came in the 07+ overseas Pajeros.

Getting an 03-06 USDM Montero enigne would get you 3.8 non-MIVEC, but with the drive by wire, M32R ECU.

The overseas engine had the same heads as the US MIVEC 75, so it'd be a fairly simple matter to build one. I'd have to look up which intake parts it used though.

This is only $1950. May as well just buy the whole truck

Would it be more feasible to run the M32R ECU? I guess if i wanted to stay NA, but we cannot tap into that ecu yet correct? That is why I am leaning towards 98 Montero ECU and wiring harness, or a TT wiring harness should i boost it.

Not sure I want to grab a second truck already lol. I may just go 74 for the block as its easier to locate. I also still have an extra set of 75 Mivec heads and crank that I could swap over.

No idea they had the 6g.

I had a Mighty Max for a little while. Extremely basic, no frills. Gets the job done, though.

Need something to tow the Exocet now.

Tactrix basically fucked us on M32R support. They also fucked their customers on providing support for protocols other than ISO9141 and CANbus. I learned that the hard way when I tried to do some work on my Focus. Tactrix originally said they were going to do the Ford and GM protocols, but then just up and decided "eh, why bother". Fuck them. I'm glad the Chinese are copying their shit now.

I kind of want a pickup. This sounds like an interesting idea.

Although, for the money, buying that 03 Montero I linked to wouldn't be that much more expensive than putting snow tires on my Audi

Too bad I have a driveway full of other cars I need to get rid of first.

Me either. Only reason I am contempating is that I can fool the sniffer as I can hide the displacement. Popping the hood and seeing a v6 where an I4 should be would kill. Also makes easier to resell back into CA if i so decide.

I have a similar driveway. Wifey isnt too excited either. I really like that its already a 72 and ready to go. My biggest challenges look to be oil pan clearance (SR block should fix that, or fab one), and the ECU/Wiring harness. If I only put a 74 or 75 in there that is NA then that should be enough fun and reliability for quite some time. No to mention it would be a torque beast and a blast going 4x4. Going TT would just be a bonus later on.

Am i nuts, or should I be looking at Montero's instead?

Mine was as basic as you could get. RWD, 4 cylinder, manual trans. It was just something I could haul my racebike with back in the early 90's.

Interesting forum. Couple of guys have already gone the TT route too. Don't seem that well planned out though.

What's the total weight of the exo?

Oh yeah, that's right. Towing capacity is only 1000 pounds for the Mighty Max. You can put 1600 pounds in the bed though, go figure.

Mighty Max brakes suck, too.

I did some looking into the towing capacity and its like 1500 lbs for the 4 cylinder and 3,500lbs for the 4x4 v6. I think the variable is the axles (9 inch im reading) and the stronger motor. Seems like the frame can take the abuse. Also apparently they are pretty low geared, so not so great on the highway. One guy says the 6 speed rear out of a TT fixes that though. Sounds plug and play. Also air lockers out of the Monteros can be swapped!

Will have to look into the brakes...
