Another montero...i haz one

Post by vr4 »

Just picked up another 94 montero sr. came into work died while driving. Talked to the guy last time it was in...told him if he ever doesn't wasnt to fix it our wants to sell it please let me know.

So...he decides not to fix it. No signal from crank sensor. After he tells me I can have it I tear it down and found this...

Thats whats left of the spacer behind the crank trigger wheel.

Then I looked at the crank snout and key...

So I went ahead and did this...

Pulled one of my spare 3.5 cranks out and put it in. $14 later for a new oil pump gasket, key, and spacer and I'll be putting it back in this weekend.

So montero #1 was about 1200. Purchased for 300+tax and fees. 350 for diamante 3.5 from junkyard, 300 or so for a full gasket (OE)

Montero #2 was 950 and needed a fuse for the tcu so it would shift. He thought it was the trans computer and even gave me one he got from the junkyard (was really the cruise control ecu). This one needs a bottom end rebuild though. Knocks on startup.

montero #3 600 and 14 in parts. Has near new 31x10.50s on it too. The other 2 had shit tires.

No pic of #2. I'll get one tomorrow.

Interesting color on #3.

Where do you park all these cars and trucks?

Lol. What do you really think about the color? About 2 weeks after getting the white one running I saw one in this color and wanted it soo bad. I finally got one. Its pretty close to my first vr4.

Traded the white one for my mr2 but theyre all at my house. Only 4 are visible from the front

I like it. It sort of reminds me of Vira's car. I've just never seen one that color.

Awesome!

I've always liked Monteros, it is great you've been able to get them and fix them so inexpensively!

Did you change the bearings or just check them?

changed the crank. visually inspected and plastigauged the bearings. all fall right in the middle of spec with the new crank.

i might do a proper rebuild on it next year....

If it's in spec I'm not sure I'd worry about it. Can you do a TT conversion on these? (will stock vr4 parts bolt up)

yes. thats the plan....someday do a TT conversion using a pair of rear manifolds.

hence why ill do it at a later date. need to find another 2nd gen rear TT head. i have a couple sets of 1st gen heads but need a head with a cam sensor mount. id rather not stuff a CAS back there. its very tight to the firewall. may not fit.

Awesome! I don't think I've ever seen one. What made me wonder if it was a PITA.

Why do you need a 3S head? Just bolt the manifolds to the existing Montero engine. It's not like you're trying to build for huge power or anything. If you do, you'll need head work and a built bottom end anyway.

Well...tack on another 50 in parts. Pulled the valve covers and decided to change the cams.

Since I had a full set of early gen 1 vr4 cams I put them in. .3mm more lift :)

It lives. Haven't driven it yet. Has a bad coil. I'll be changing them tomorrow and hopefully take it for a drive.

well got the miss mostly taken care of. the coil boots were worn/broken internally so they wernt contacting the plugs. i got 1 taken care of and need to do another one buit had a 15 hr job come in.

even intermittantly dropping 1 cyl it feels stronger than my green (stock) SR....and im willing to bet hes got 87 octane in this thing.

Fixed it. Itll stomp my stock one with no problems. I might make a video for the lulz.
