sooo... 6g72 with fwd 3S bellhousing mated to awd dsm tranny.
what would need to happen? my train of thought is fwd 3s tranny = dsm awd tranny with different diff housing/output. with some research, do you think a mate could be found? figured jeremy or jeff would be the ones to ask before i go any farther down this mental alley

It's called a GTO SR transmission
You can't just swap a FWD 6G72 bell housing onto a FWD or AWD 4G63 trans case.
the internals and transfer case from the SR are nearly identical to the DSM hardware. They use the same rear diff components, albeit in a different housing.

well, for a long time now i've been thinking about building a locost. and i've pretty much decided to start going for it. i know the 6g72 well and haven't seen one in a locost yet at all. however, for weight/cost reasons i was hoping to pick up an awd dsm donor. i'd like to build an awd locost and this seems like it could be a good combo. of course, this is all just thinking out load at this point.
i guess i was under the impression that they fwd 3s and awd dsm are identical internally. is this not true? were you assuming i wanted it in a 3s and need the 3s specific rear diff? i can't imagine the dsm components would not be able to handle ~300whp in a 1500lb vehicle.

They are almost entirely identical internally.
But when you say this...
sooo... 6g72 with fwd 3S bellhousing mated to awd dsm tranny.
You can't do that. The 3S bell housing won't bolt to the DSM tranny case.
You'd need to use a GTO SR trans to attach to a 6G72.
The other big problem I'm seeing is the Locost uses a longitudally mounted engine. The 6G72 and DSM/3S tranny assembly is transverse mount. It'd never fit as long as you keep anything remotely resembling the stock Locost frame from the firewall forward.

ok, that's what i was looking for.
and i don't agree that there is a "stock"

locost. there are classic type ones based on the original 7, but a true locost is done custom for whatever builder. ie, i'm building it from scratch. it will be true to the locost spirit, but not necessarily a classic seven type.

Custom is fun. Just understand it's going to be a major departure from the Locost template to go to a transverse engine. It'll be considerably heavier, and the weight balance will be all kinds of f'd up. Keeping the engine low along the longitudal centerline of the car really helps handling.
Honestly what I'd do is scrap this crazy AWD idea, and use a Mitsubishi Montero trans in a RWD configuration. You'd still have a heavy engine up front, but at least the weight would be distributed a little better.
If you're really hung up on the AWD idea, see if you can retrofit the transfer case from a Montero and drive the front wheels through that.

jeff... i'm making my own custom frame i'm designing from the ground up. at this point i'm just kicking around some ideas. this is something i've been stewing over for a long time and finally feel like i'm at the point where i can really start to do some designing. the whole idea is to go through all the development necessary for that. also, mitsu is definitely not a requirement. was thinking more of a rear mounted engine, transmission under/behind driver for this particular concept.
but, it's just one possibility. and the more i think about it, the more hung up i am on this
crazy awd idea
thanks for the input! i figured asking here would save me some time researching and i was right.

I love the mid-rear idea. I just can't think of any way to correctly drive the front wheels, unless you have a custom transfer case made.
