My cars overheating issue.

Post by J-Groove »

Cliff's Notes: My radiator shroud came unglued and sucked into my fan and it really sucks.

Okay, randomness for the MFL!

Here is my current radiator/fan set up.

Stock radiator with aftermarket Flex-a-Light fans. Which cool the water temps very very well.....when random shit doesn't happen.

A couple of weeks ago when I was driving to Rowlett from Waco my car started to run a little too hot. So I turned off the AC and she cooled down. My guess, thermostat, radiator was heat soaked etc. As it was over 90 that day and when this happened I was stuck in bumper to bumper traffic and had been for almost an hour.

For the last couple of weeks, no problems what so ever, so I'm leaning towards heat soaked. Then yesterday, light traffic, nothing big, AC is not full blast. And she starts to get to hot again. So I pull over.

I notice my fans aren't on so my first thought is I messed up on wiring somewhere. So I get a ride back home and come back last night to pick her up once everything is cooled down.

I got up this morning and started going through all my wiring, everything was perfect. So I started poking around and saw a drop of something on my lower front cross member. It was a ball of melted plastic. That was when I noticed my fan shroud was missing.

I found it wrapped around the driver side fan. My best guess is the other day when the car would get hot then cool (when I was in traffic) the shroud was coming loose, the fans was binding slightly but then breaking free. Then for the past couple of weeks the part of the shroud that was loose just wasen't getting caught. Then yesterday it was snagged and all hell broke loose.

Here is the aftermath, I didn't take a picture prior to me pulling it all apart. :(

WooHoo! Now my fans are toast and my radiator has some major bent up fins.

You should be able to pick up a fin comb and it will straighten the fins out for you. That really sucks man. I know how it goes. I just ordered a set of FlexALites from IPS because one of my stockers bit the dust. Figure might as well go brand new and upgrade at the same time. Least now I know to double check my install and make sure nothing will move on me.

That sucks, At least it wasnt a aftermarket radiator. A comb should straighten out a large portion of the fins.

Typ, the radiator is very salvageable.

The fans I think I may have either gotten a bad set, all it would take is a little section to not be perfectly glued to have this all happen.

Or maybe the Texas heat and my car living in it along with not running heat shields paid the price. :(

Either way I'm going to try and find a set of heat shields from a part out now just to be safe.
