ATX slipping

Post by vegasidol »

My ATX has started slipping out of first within the first couple minutes of driving. I make sure the shifter is seated (had problems with that a couple of times), then I shift into N and back to drive and then it's fine for the rest of the trip.

Checked the fluid and it looks good. I'm concerned because I already had a trans go out on this car...and I'm dreading going through that again. I think I have an extra ATX laying around, but I'm not sure of its condition...and then there's actually installing it.

Any suggestions? Ideas? :(

Generally if the atx starts to slip it's because of fluid pressure not being what it is supposed to be. Could be a clogged filter or a failing pump. You can try changing the filter (if you know it hasn't been done in the last 20k miles) and put in new fluid and it could last you a bit longer. In the end it sounds like the pump might be going bad. You can replace them fairly easily with the transmission out of the car. I believe they are held in by 8 bolts... maybe more?

If you are going to just replace the pump, you better stop driving the car. With a pump going bad or being bad, you can prematurely wear out the clutch packs inside the trans. Rebuilding the auto trans isn't that bad. Get Jeff over there to help you out.

ATXs are my one weakness. I know absolutely nothing about them :(

Not saying I couldn't rebuild one with some time and a good manual. Just that I'm pretty useless when it comes to diagnosis and such :(

Yea, I'm in the same boat as you Jeff. I watched my neighbor rebuild an ATX for me and it seems easier then a manual trans. It's just a bunch of o-rings, clutch packs, and c-clips. The stealth factory service manual is pretty good at explaining everything. Just keep everything spotless by using air to clean everything off. You can get a rebuild kit from IPT for around $400 and spend a day rebuilding something for the first time and gaining some knowledge about it... maybe expanding your business a bit ;)

I've got a burned out Avenger transmission sitting in the shop right now. I'm going to dissect it one of these days. I've just been too busy lately, and now my partner has got his Stealth ripped apart in there. Such fun.

I love how life throws a shoe horn in your plans and you can never live up to keeping on schedule :) . I schedule 1 or 2 days a week (out of a 6 day week) with nothing to do because I know something stupid is going to happen and ruin a whole day for me.

Did you see my reply to your PS leak thread? You can fix it without replacing the entire line.
