I had a 90 corsica as a first car. 4 banger. It ran good and got good gas mileage. I was driving it back when gas was 85 cents/gallon so I don't remember much about it. It lasted me a year and my sister had it before me for a couple of years with very little maintenance.

a $1k car is going to have the same amount of shit wrong as a $700 one. and you're going to have to fix some of that to make it useable as a DD for your love. so make sure you don't blow your whole budget on the initial purchase.
good luck! they're out there, but unfortunately usually not at the time you need them.
