Ugh! Car troubles!

Post by Duck Vader »

Damn it! As some of you know, I made a post a little while ago looking for cheap car parts (exhaust) for my wife's 87 Nova.

Today we decided to take it to the store. When we went to start it, it would not start at all. I popped the hood and it turns out the choke was not setting right, so I fiddle around a bit with that until we got the car started. When we put it in reverse we heard a very loud "thud" and the whole car jumped... :( ...

We get it into the road and put it in drive, another "thud" and this time even bigger.

We start down the road. We get going up to about 20 mph and wait for it to shift into 2nd, then we wait some more, then a little more. By now we are going about 26 and it wont go any faster, but the rpm's are climbing like crazy. We left off the gas and the car goes completely quit, like as if it shut off, but we hit the gas again, and the rpms shoot up again.

We tried getting it to 26 and letting go of the gas to see if it will shift. Nope, it just slows us down. So the car will not shift out of first at all.

We turn around and go home. Once in the driveway, we put it in park, then reverse again, and again the huge "thud". We put the gear shift all the way down to 1st, it sounds the same, into 2nd, no change in anything, it still sounds like 1st.

This car has 103,000 miles on it. It needs a complete exhaust system, something with the choke, and maybe something with the tranny now.

I checked the tranny fluid, it looks fine.

Any ideas on a cheap quick fix, or would we be better to just sell it and hope we can get some $ out of it?

Nothing is loose or knocked off the carb. The engine seems to run ok, but the transmission just wont shift for some reason.

well there not much else it could be.

you were messing with the carb and now it wont shift. the only thing that would cause this is something loose or missing.

I took it out of the garage and looked at the carb, nothing looks loose or disconnected.

I really dont know alot about carbs though, this is my first car that is no fuel injected.

Ok, so today I finally checked out the carb really good today, and there is nothing out of place. I even had my neighbor who restores old cars take a look, and he said it was ok.

So I decided to check the tranny fluid again, and guess what? The dip stick was COVERED in metal flakes. So I wipe it off and dip it in again, comes out with more little flakes.

We are probably just going to sell it and hope to get at least a couple hundred out of it.

So I take the car out today and it shifts fine, but the exhaust is loud enough to set off car alarms.

Not on a 4 cyl 87 Nova, but it does sound like a punk driver trying to show off his 4 banger.

That is what I thought, but when I checked the fluid again, no flakes, and it shifts fine now. I am wondering if the flakes were just pieces of rust that fell off the tube the dipstick sits in? It is REALLY rusty and dirty under the hood.

you can change the fluid out and see if that helps. Is the fluid red or is it orangish?

if it's oragnish/brown then it's burned and that can make it not shift. Otherwise not shifting is usually due to a shift solenoid or something along those lines (wouldn't have metal flakes if that was the case). If you have a bunch of metal flakes in there, it's something more serious than a solenoid.

First thing to do is change the fluid.......or if you're going to be getting another car, don't drive it until you can sell it :p

Im not. Someone might be coming today to look at it. They seem serious about buying it, problem is my wife is the only one home, and I don't know if she will keep her mouth shut or not. I think she would, but sometimes when she starts talking, she does not stop.

Well the car is pretty much sold. The parents of the kid the car is for stopped by and said that they like it and everything. They are going to come back after 4 with the 17 yr old kid to see if he likes it enough to buy it. $600 is not bad for it with the problems. It will be weird seeing a car we had being driven around town. My truck went to Ireland, my VR4 to ohio, and my wifes cars are all over PA.

$600, sweet...that will get you towards buying a better replacement...not that an '87 Nova isn't somewhat reliable, it is a Toyota underneath after all.

yep, it is a toyota corolla all the way. It was just not worth it with the bad carb, exhaust, and tranny. She wanted fuel injection for these cold winters up here and something that is better in the snow.

I just realized something, now she has NO car at all to drive what so ever. I need to find something, and fast. I still dont want to go over 1000 if I can help it, I have other bills to pay. It will help if her dad gets the money $ for the thing I mentioned in the general section.
