non-hubcentric wheels and repeated metal fatigue from not having proper support for the wheels

but that would not cause all 4 wheels to fail at once, at least not while going in a relativly straight line at low speed

ding ding ding you get the gold star. Found a guy on Bimmerforums that was there when it happened and here is wha the had to say about it

"That's one of my friends that I autocross with in the Dixie region. Really stand-up guy, the last person to work on his car put incorrectly threaded lug bolts on his car, and the owner didn't check. Car has minor body damage, and the car was flatbedded home (from Valdosta, GA, to Tallahassee, FL). All of the details are still coming out about this, so don't want to post any more as I'm not 100% sure of any of it."

The reason I guessed that is because it happened to me. I had brought my silverado when i still had it to a local shop in Youngstown Ohio to fix a flat tire. The next morning I was driving down the road and my wheel fell off.

I felt the back end drop to the left and I looked out my driver window and saw my wheel and brake drum roll by my window and down the road.

They had put the wrong lug nuts on... I dont know how, but they did. They paid to get my brakes fixed and for 4 new wheels since the ones I had were no longer made.

I ended up getting chrome wheels put on at their expense.

I had a flat, and I was away from my garage, so it needed fixed. Besides that, I never pay anyone to fix anything on any of my vehicles. I do it all myself.

I am just wondering how you can get lug nuts/lug bolts mixxed up. Are you just tossing them in a bucket with 30 other pairs when you take them off at a shop? I mean come on

That is what I thought, but I guess it happens.

More importantly, how do you not NOTICE putting them on? Feel a little loose much?

This is why a torque wrench is your friend. Where it wouldn't have stopped this problem, but you would have noticed it first.

I can't imagine being in a car when that happens. It is something out of a cartoon.

I thought the same thing!
I also thought of putting the video to the benny hill theme and playing that one section over and over. I laughed heartily at the thought.

1 or 2 wheels, sure..then you check the remaining wheels..but for _all_ 4 wheels to fly off simultaneously..that guy must have had some serious karma to make up for :p

We were behind a bunch of kids when their real wheel flew off into the bushes doing about 80 km/h thanks to some fucker looseing all four nuts. Damn those things can bounce at pace!
