Sorry, I just copied this over from 3si because it doesn't seem like anyone ever reads my threads over there.

Well anyway here's the low-down, maybe one of you can give me some good info on what's going on:

Tranny has always been notchy (Eg. don't shift too fast or it'll grind, also it requires a very small amount of force to be put into gears. Not like other manuals I've driven where it almost "sucks" it into gear). I deal with this, it's been like that always...

About 2 years ago, I lose 1st and 2nd gear. Bring it to the shop, it gets sent out to Kormex to fix stuff. I get it back, and it seems like 1st gear doesn't have a synchro, what I mean by this is that it grinds when I attempt to put it into 1st while moving. Everything else works fine, tranny still notchy.

FFWD to this week: I wanted to teach my brother how to drive a manual, he got nervous and jammed 1st a couple of times while revving. Lovely grinding sound and the whole shebang. After he did this about three times in a row, it doesn't let you shift into first gear at all. I start in 2nd, drives fine every other gear works. About 50 % of the time thereafter 1st worked fine, sometimes I would have to lurch forward in 2nd to be able to shift into 1st.

My guess was that the already non-functioning synchro somehow died altogether, and the gear blocks me when its not aligned right.

So then I drive around cautiously, but then my 1st gear starts to work normally again (well not normally, but I can always shift into it while standing still). Then, my reverse dies completely out of the blue, after it worked fine a couple of times.

So what the heck is going on, anybody have any clue? Why would my first gear stop working, then work again, and then my reverse stop working??

Sounds like the dog teeth are badly worn out on the 1st gear and 1-2 slider ring. Make sure nothing is in the way of the gear selector on top of the trans that would block you out of reverse.

No the clutch disengages completely.. I am sure of that.
I'm not completely sure what exactly was done, the tranny was sent out by speedfactor and was completed through a warranty. I figured it was an overhaul of it, but then when I had the problems with 1st I didn't know what to think..

The fluid hasn't been changed since that work being done to it, I haven't checked the level of it because the drain and fill plugs are not the normal ones anymore but ones requiring allen keys, and I couldn't get them off.

Yea the first thing I thought of was something getting in the way. When I first put in my BOV I had to tie it back to keep it from blocking the shifter, but I relocated it so that wouldn't be a problem anymore. I checked the tubing etc and it just barely touches it without much force.

^yea make sure it isnt jammed up against anything like ur counterweight

If I needed a synchro, that would basically just give me a worse chance of getting it into gear wouldn't it? As in, whenever the gears aren't aligned right, I'll have to move it a bit for it to work. But since I shift into reverse only when I am standing still, why would I need a synchro for reverse to begin with?

The dog teeth often wear out on the reverse gear as well. Why? I'm not sure since it's not often you shift into reverse (compared to all other gears). We just recently rebuilt a 5 speed awd trans where the dog teeth totally came off of the reverse gear. Crazy stuff happens with not much explaination LOL.

That's totally different.. I wasn't even doing anything with reverse, and it worked fine until it suddenly stopped... (1st was the one that was messing up..)

That would be pretty difficult if you have the part in the trans that makes it click over to get into reverse. But, I guess anything is feasible. Can't say I've ever done that though.

That safety doesn't work if you go from 4th to 6th and miss.
