Whats your real-world MPG?

Post by Macky »

I actually find this funny at the same time interesting - I have been measuring how much fuel I have been consuming during the last half of the year I was driving my Evo MR, and started at the begining of this year (three months after I got my Acura) for the TL.

Honestly, I just wanted to see how accurate the EPA estimates were and see how much my driving directly affects fuel economy. freeway speeds range between 65-75 mph, and surface street speeds are an almost constant 45, sometimes 50 mph. these figures also reflect some quick sprints from time to time.

Below is a snapshot of an Excel spreadsheet I made based on actual figures I key in to the car's calendar/computer every time I refuel since the begining of the year. the ratio of city:highway driving is approximately 90:10, so I just noted that this is the combined figure for both.

any comments/suggestions/reactions welcome. :)

Was around 23mpg N/A. It's been significantly less since the turbo went on, but once I learn to control my lead foot I'm sure it'll be 23 or higher again.

I'm getting about 16/17 city, and 28 on the highway. Gotta love 1700 RPM at nearly 80 MPH.

I was getting 20-25 on the way to OC which is surprising considering I was running rich enough to make my rear bumper black.

I think I was getting around 20-22 on the way down to OC and it was running a bit rich (and I had to haul big mike's ass down there).
In the ZJ, real world MPD (mile-per-dollar) was about 5.75 miles per dollar. (I always put $20 and meaure miles between fill-up).

So with gas prices around $2.65/gal, that's 5.75*2.65 ~ 15mpg. LOL!
I didnt want to measure the mile-per-dollar because that was going to give me a heart attack with the gas prices now  :D

i fill up at the halfway mark because it is cheaper than waiting to run tanks dry. recently, that has been averaging $22~28 dollars to fill up to half tank. and its only getting worse for us here in CA :(

I clicked over 31 MPG on my last little trip on the stealth in NA mode. How could I afford to get rid of this car?

My first year at OC we did 120mph pretty much the whole way there and I got 30mpg. I bet it would have been 35 if we took it easy. I can't wait to get this thing tuned with the maft pro's partial throttle tracking. Turbo cars are getting almost 30mpg, I bet 35 won't be hard for an "NA".

I was getting 28 mpg on my trip from Waco, Texas to Pompano Beach, Florida while I was N/A. Cruise was set at 80mph on most of the trip. I also found an awesome back road in Georgia on that trip.

Engine info for that time; engine was over 100,000 miles, had K&N FIPK and Borla TT cat back. Running on the stock 16" and stock n/a brakes. Car was loaded with clothes and my computer.

SL/NA - avg per tank was 27mpg. Worst tank was 24mpg, and best was 31.5
SL/TT - avg per tank is 19mpg. Worst tank was 15mpg, best was 23mpg

SVT Focus - avg per tank is 28mpg. Worst tank was 25mpg, best was 33mpg.

I have records too, but not in a spreadsheet. I just keep a mental note on the last 5 tanks (Don't ask), and best/worst. With the SVTF I also have a log book to write down every penny put into the car in the glove box.

So 17-19 mpg is better than what you were getting in the MR?

yes.

on the Evo I was getting fuel every other day. thats normal city driving. best Ive got was 18 MPG, and thats if i take freeways (assuming the freeway isnt jammed).

for the TL, all these figures are basically city driving. I hop on the freeway every weekday morning and travel approx. 10 miles at speeds ranging from 40 mph to 65 mph for about 15-20 mins. so i never really factor in a huge percent to freeway driving.

I technically look at the EPA figures as the number you will see if you do more than 70% of your driving on either one. In my case (20 MPG city / 29 MPG highway for the TL), I do over 90% city driving so I dont look forward to seeing the 29 MPG unless Im going on a trip and will be on the freeway 70% of the time. so if i look at it that way, the 20 MPG advertised is actually realistic, since I hover at or around that figure (sometimes topping it) under normal driving conditions.

mind you, I never open my windows so my MPGs reflect about 50% running a/c.

:D

About 26-28 in the Stealth. It'll get better once I get the exhaust patched up.

I get about 20-25 in the city. On the highway, it's 30-40. Yay! :-)
