Snow driving

Yes tires will be number 1. Always have been. The driveway doesn’t get driven in the snow. If it starts or know it’s coming we park up top.

Is there anything that can help combat the weight of the vehicle. That was the main thing that sucked in the Humvee. Light snow that thing sucked to drive as if it started to slide then just hold on as it weighs so much. Is that chains? Is that gearing? Is that tire pressure? Or just can’t really do anything about that?

Did you have good snow tires and get stuck? Or were you just driving around on all season tires, since this type of weather doesn't happen often in TN.

Also, what do you do to your firetrucks to get them through the snow?

And I’ve driven a Honda Accord a lot of place in the snow. It’s possible but that doesn’t mean it was ideal or smart. Different parts of the US get different types of snow, melts and refrezes differently, moisture, and all the above. So call it what you want, 6” in my town causes ALOT of problems and if my driveway is like that it has another side to get down. If I want to over complicate things or over build then let me. If you have no experience then say that. If you do...say that. But just naw you don’t need them, others don’t isnt really what I care about. Why, what does it do, pros, cons, best brands, automatics, air, electric, come on. Talk about things. Every brand says their the best and all you read online is trutrack or Detroit.

I get you don’t need it for MI but maybe you should with how shitty the roads are. And yes there are bigger hills than TN but they usually are prepared for it.

About 6 years ago I had to get to Johnson city to take a first responder test. It snowed, prob about 3 inches. I drove my accord to get my parents Yukon. Took the Yukon an hour away. The further away the worse it got. It looked like a scene out of a movie, all cars pulled over to the side, stuck, 1,000 of them. 4x4’s and cars alike. The Yukon made it but saw plenty that didn’t. I don’t want to be one that didn’t.

So what type of locker in the rear end is the best stock driving but can lock and be the bad ass one. I don’t think I want a locker for the front so what’s a good upgrade over stock? Lsd?

Very aggressive stock Humvee tires.

Fire trucks have these nuematic chains and we flip a switch and they drop down under the rear tires and spin pretty cool honestly.

Deep snow vs deep snow on a substantial incline are not the same thing. Open diffs will work good to a point with aggressive tires, but more wheels spinning is key to pushing through. In Coops case either an LSD or locker will help and give added security.

So I’m gonna spend 13k maybe more. If I can find an 09 with towing then it will take my whole amount. I can find 2500’s in the 5-8k. So then I could spend a good amount.

I’ve only driven the vr4 a couple times in the snow but it was a beast. Maybe I should just find a stock one for the snow. Lol.

If you are set on an Avalanche. Say you get one for $8k. I say get good snow tires - $1000 - plenty of great brands/tires out there. Looks for true M/S tires - Locker - if you end up getting the 2500, it makes things harder. There rear differential is 14 bolt Corporate 10.5 - https://eastcoastgearsupply.com/c-28749 ... posis.html those are some options on there. Figure with install looking at probably $1000? That puts you at $10k. Winch - Warn 9500 at least. Truck is going to weight damn near 7000 lbs. Especially with people/gear/etc. That is about $2k. Leaves you $1k for maintenance.

If one of your biggest concerns is stopping or sliding then a set of dedicated winter tires are a must. Not all seasons, not AT with the 3peaks symbol, but a true dedicated winter/snow tire. Something like the Blizzak DM-V2, or if you really want to go hard core Firestone Winterforce with studs.

Very good point. People confuse 4WD or AWD with increased control or stopping distance. Not true, the playing field is the same for everyone, so better tires is your only real improvement.

Funny you mention that. Here is a video nearly 13 years old when I first bought my TT Stealth in College. The previous owner gave me an extra set of snow studded tires. That car was unstoppable...including these snow covered sand dunes. My buddy got stuck with his new 4 Runner right off the main road about 100 yards away. Stealth didn't even struggle.

I have hills and mountains all over my area. I haven't owned a 4WD since 2000. I drove my lowered on coilover Stealth in several inches of snow without issue.

The point is you are over complicating this. A good set of tires and half a brain will get you about anywhere you need to go.

Yes but it's coop. Hell I didn't have 4wd until Wisconsin and even then never used it. First time I ever had to use 4wd was out here. Learned to drive in the snow off lake erie in a rwd truck with summer tires. Never got stuck. But that is us. Not coop. Coop needs to be overkill on everything.

Hell I drove a whole winter in a 86 Mustang. I had trouble ONE time, and that was because we got a early snow storm. I put winter treads on and never got stuck or had trouble after that. I worked in Morgantown, WV at the time and WV does NOT take proper care of their roads in the winter. I drove around 4WD's stuck in ditches. I had only been driving for 2 years at that point, maybe less, yet I still had the skill and mindset not to let snow stop me from getting where I had to get.

This was after we backed up a good bit looking for a spot to turn around. Its old snow so it was really packed and icy. Just had less control than i felt comfortable with with the all seasons on it.

Don’t worry Ryan, most people here would have made it in a 4 cyl mustang on their spare skinny tires.

Maybe it’s the over kill in me, maybe it the job that I will have to be at, maybe it’s my experience, but I’ve done the things you all talk about as well. First vehicle rwd pick up and drive in the snow. Honda, drove in the snow and with shitty tires....I’ve been there. Now I have money, have ability, and want to have the right build...,what’s wrong with that?
