I think they said this guy's been through ten transmissions.

This. Neglect is HUGE with 80s vehicles. But anyone I know with one that takes even a little care of them they are solid.
And the blazer over the Jeep any day!!! Pull more, go more places, worth more, look better, prob same gas mileage, cheaper parts....like there is no compairison here.

The video Jeff posted said the guy went through 10 transmissions. The car looks really well maintained, so I'm not sure it was neglected.
Though I assume you should be able to get built transmissions for Blazers now too.
Oil not leaking out the bottom. Even if its vss, then its caused bad carbon build up for years on the piston. And will have other effects.

Im not worried about carbon. He kind of contradicts himself about it not leaking, but not wanting to chase down the leak. Im betting its probably a combo of VSS and valve cover gaskets, rear cam seal, front/rear crank seals.
The fact that is a 98, likely winter edition (denoted by front headlight sprayers), so it has the towing package, locker, maybe higher gears. Its already set up to flash tune as it sits. Ideally one would want to put in a knock sensor and wire it to an updated ecu. Either way, now you can drop in any 6G7* motor and tune it to run. Hell a cheap 3.8 would be a nice upgrade to that thing, or even get a little silly with an SR motor.

Hmm leaks somewhere near the passenger exhaust manifold. Sounds like valve covers to me?

Valve cover gasket or maybe exhaust VSS. Seems like it'd be an easy fix. Or just keep on driving it and try to ignore it. For $1200, can put up with some little issues.
