This is a common occurrence on them. I refuse to do any HVAC work on them unless the customer is fully aware the dash will be in pieces when it's done.

In and of itself, it's not worth it. But the project itself is the reward.

The massive power wire is because the battery is in the trunk.

PDR is nice, but I honestly don't use mine much. If it could be used like Tesla's Sentry Mode, that would be cool, but it can't record off the rear camera and only runs when the car is started.

I got the parts fairly cheap, and I just wanted to see if I could do it.

I'm really starting to get irritated with automotive connectors and all the different designs and terminals and crimping tools though. Got seriously jammed up on a power wire that's allegedly the correct gauge, but the insulation is just a hair too thick to slide into the connector properly. I had hoped to have this mostly wrapped up yesterday.

I've got everything wired up. The PDR app comes up on the screen, and I took about 30 seconds of video sitting in the garage. It shows at least some logged data in the desktop PDR app, so that's good. I won't have a good feel for exactly how much data it can log until I take it out and drive it. My module is out of a 2018, and as I mentioned PDR wasn't even an option in 2014, so I'm concerned there will be a big mismatch between what the PDR expects to see on the CANbus and what my car actually provides.

I need to tape up the wiring harnesses I built, cut the hole in the glovebox for the SD card reader, re-assemble the interior. It's all pretty easy stuff from here onward.

I'd think the CANbus should have most, if not all, of the data. Big ones are vehicle speed, brake pedal position, throttle position, steering angle, yaw angle, driving mode, etc. A 2014 should have all of that in the traction control module.

Not sure what I want to do to my Corvette over the winter, though if it may be a while before I get a C8 then perhaps I want some forced induction for next year to keep up with any C8s I might run across.

I'm confident my car has the data. I'm just worried the formatting and/or the channel IDs are different. A good example is how my drive mode customization menu doesn't work after upgrading to the 2016+ HMI. It's won't enable the menus because the CAN messages it needs either aren't there at all, or they're on a different channel ID.

I've also got a 2015 PDR module, but it's messed up. I'm going to plug it into the car before I button everything back up and see if maybe I can restore the software somehow.

You would think they would've just used the data that was already there, but, you know, engineers like to fuck with everything

I know they made some significant changes to the data network in 2017. So it wouldn't surprise me if half of this stuff just doesn't work with an '18 PDR. Figuring that stuff out is part of the fun though.

Just build a little ESP32 CAN message converter.

I'd rather figure out the CAN filters within the PDR so I can tell it to capture anything I want.

I've found references to a developer screen within the firmware. I just need to figure out how to access it.

I had a good weekend with my car. Finally got the PDR install wrapped up. Seems to be working decent so far.



While I had the windshield header apart, I decided to mock up the rear camera mirror I bought. This thing is cool as hell. It doesn't totally get rid of the blind spots, but it helps a lot. It does take some getting used to though. With a normal mirror, your eyes don't refocus when you look at it. Now that you're looking at a video image inside the car, you have to refocus. It wasn't too bad in the limited test drive I took.

I'm going to take it back off until I figure out a better mount. I think I'm going to get another roof trim piece and look at cutting it up and installing a 3D printed camera enclosure in it. Then maybe get the whole thing wrapped in carbon fiber or something.
