So this truck is still kicking butt...slowly.

I'm trying to figure out something that's been going on since we bought it. It's had an intermittent code for misfire on cylinder 2 (P0302). It'll go out, sometimes for a week or so at a time. Then pop back up for no apparent reason. I replaced the plugs and moved the coils around. The problem stayed on #2. I haven't done a compression test yet. It feels like it's got a slight hesitation above 3000rpm, but that could just be vibration due to the tires. It's pretty vague.

I would think if it was something mechanical, it would always be on. My only thought at this point is it's got a marginal fuel injector.

Any thoughts?

GM’s have horrible grounds. Just off the top of my head.

If there was a bad ground it would affect more than just one specific cylinder.

My first thought was injectors. Swap them and see if misfire moves.

I have to take the intake manifold off to get to them. If I go that far, I'm going to replace them on principle. The truck has over 170k on it, and I can get a full set of new ones for $90.

I'm tempted to do the fuel pump for the same reason, but it's a little more expensive at ~$250.

Another win for the XJ. Super easy to get to the fuel injectors. Only hard thing to get to is the fuel pump. Damn thing is in the gas tank.

Right before my fuel pump went out. I got the same code, two days apart that said it was running lean. Never felt it in the truck so I just shrugged it off.

It took me 9 months to condemn one of my customers envoy with bad intake valves. Swap coils, plugs, injectors, intake gaskets, etc. Finally caught it in the act and a vacuum gauge confirmed it.

Replace all 12 intake valves and no problems. Yes it's a somewhat common problem on the 2.8/3.5/4.2

Ours is a 3.7. They allegedly fixed the head problems late in 06, and carried those fixes on when they revised the engine from 3.5 to 3.7.

I think the fix was heads with harder valve seats or something.

Between this and the 20hp difference, I avoided the 2006 models entirely.

Something good to say about the XJ? Why i never...

Ive changed the fuel pump and it sucked. Only because you cannot drain the plastic tank. Oh, the fumbling and workout that ensued.


Jeff i would look at injectors first, but it sounds like its a pain to gain access. Not a bad job for $90 and all new injectors though.
