Dealer also said that even if I would want it and let them know I'd be on my way, until I'm physically at the location, they could sell it. Won't even hold it for me if I agree to buy it.

Not sure about Oregon law but supposedly on CA they're legally not allowed to hold a vehicle. Most places will park it outback off the main line but it someone shows up demanding to see it they can sell it to them.

I even had someone start paperwork on a vehicle I was driving sight unseen to guarantee they got the vehicle. Got back from the test drive and the sales manager was like "oh yeah it sold while you were gone ..."

Told them as much as I want it I just don't know when I can get there so thanks but no thanks. Not worth the hassle.

Just cling in on if one has been acquired yet.

Toying around with the idea of getting a diesel again. Just opens up so many more possibilities/choices for me. Powerstroke 7.3 or Duramax LB7/LBZ is what I would limit it to.

Can we circle back to the duties this needs to perform? Will this be a daily? Just needed to haul you to move a couple times?

I just say that because I see non turbo f350 7.3 that are that older ford style. Not horrible miles for 5-7k ish.

Duties:

Carry 2-3k in the bed a few times a year.
Tow up to around 10k 1-2 times a year depending on type of trailer I end up getting. Prefer enclosed, but also will eventually need a car hauler and don't really want 2 trailers.
Drive to SoCal about 1x ever 1-2 years and will be loading the bed up a lot during those trips.
Tow toys when I get them - think Chevelle
Drive from here to PA and tow back a large trailer in the next year or two.
Depending on if we get something with awd/4wd for Danielle, I will be winter driving it and she takes the subaru.

Towing is not as important as payload. Most if not all the towing could be done with a good 1500/150, but payload needs are going to be the biggest issue. Hence why looking at the 2500/250, but also needs to be reliable enough to handle cross country trips.

Figuring about 7-8k miles a year will be put on it.

That is the need for the next couple of years. Plan is to keep 10 years until student loans are done, then look at buying something new.

I know 1500/150s are rated to tow 10k lbs but rarely is their payload high enough to actually support towing that kind of weight. When you figure you need 1000-1200lbs of payload, minimum, for just the tongue weight it means you need at least 1500-1700 lbs of payload capacity to tow that 10k trailer and have a driver. Anything else in your truck requires that much more payload.

Now that being said many times those numbers are somewhat meaningless because the GVWR is dictated by government truck weight classes. For example my truck has a GVWR of 7350, but you could order a payload package that basically only bumped the GVWR to 7700lbs.

That's why I'm exclusively looking at 2500/250

I read somewhere here recently where the hitch on my avalanche was only rated for like 5,000lbs when the truck is rated to tow more. So even things like that need to come into play.

You really need the newest 2500,250 you can find, with the lowest miles. If it ends up being gas or diesel, just roll with it. Either should fit your needs.

That's likely just dead weight. My truck is rated for 5k dead weight but 9100 with weight distribution. That being said some mfg have different hitches with different overall weight limits. Toyota did this on the GX and the Land Cruiser.

I am kind of wary about buying a 20 yr old truck the more I think about it.

Whatever I buy, the plan is to last at least 10 yrs as mentioned earlier. A 20 yr old truck will already start having issues let alone over the next 10 years.

So I am have been really thinking about just spending a little more and seeing if I can get a good price on a 2011+ F250 with the 6.2. Found a couple that were at the top end of my price range ($25k is the most I want to spend) but they either are Canada trucks or have sold already.

If I bump that to $30k a lot more open up, but that is out of what I feel comfortable with right now. It is only $5k difference, but at the same time that is another $100+ a month since I will be financing it. I could pay cash, but want to see how much I need to put into the gym first. If I don't have to put that much in I can then make a few bigger payments and pay it off early.

As much as I’m against payments. I wish I would have done the same with the avalanche. I paid 7,200 I think. I had a budget of 10k. I wish I would have gotten something about 15k at the time and took out a 5-7k loan.

Used market is starting to burst. Next summer should start to look much better.
