I don't know how anyone could keep a beefed up roller skate like that pointed in any direction for longer than 2 seconds.
They can't... Watching that car on the auto-X over and over made me realize that much power is a waste. It just idles thru the courses to keep the speeds low enough to control the corners.

I would have to agree. Likely anything over ~350 hp is going to be hard to keep planted on something so small and light.

Good news!!!
Landlord decided to keep the house and hire a relator to rent it out. Meaning I'm not in danger of losing my garage.
Game on!
Now to figure out how to build the thing... Cordy says his LFX frames won't be ready for some time plus I need to figure out how to fund the project.

Coworker had a 98 Montero Sport sitting around at his place rusting away with a bad trans. Asked me if I wanted since "you used to be into Mitsubishis and stuff."
This synapsed a recent memory of something I read.

This truck has the 4G64 EVO variant engine. It'll take an EVO head. Specifically the one from an EVO IX with the VVT.
This block will accept an RX7 transmission.... I need just the bell housing and input shaft bearing from this transmission to swap onto my spare Miata transmission.....
Wonder if a DSM intake plenum and exhaust manifold bolts right into the EVO head?
Then I can use the OEM EVO ECU to tune...
Just a thought.

The R5M21 transmission in the 2.4L Sport doesn't have a separate bell housing like the V5MT1 V6 transmission that Steve and I have.

Yep and that's fine. Supposedly won't need it.

Oh, ok. I thought you were planning to use the Sport tranny as a donor.

The thought of trying some 4wd setup came to mind but... Nah.

The 2.4L sport was RWD only. At least in the US.

Going to attempt a batshit crazy, build for one of the heavier monteros? Why not!

The EVO block in my case works better because the turbo is on the driver side of the car where I need it for the exhaust. Plus it's close to a bolt in affair...

DSM manifolds won't bolt to an EVO from what I remember.

They'd be facing the wrong direction anyway.
See if the truck manifolds will fit. I can't find a picture of the 4 cylinder engine right now, but the intake routes over the top just like the V6 does.

The EVO manifolds point the wrong way. The DSM ones (driver side engine bay mounted) will.
....but if they won't bolt on then boo....

I think I see what you're saying now.
Still,this wouldn't be terrible:
If you're worried about it being too tall, maybe see what's up with this. I'll be damned if I can find out what truck this is, but it's an overseas 4G64. The intake is a lot lower.

Oops. Forgot the 4G64 Mighty Max. This is a little closer to home.

I must be imagining all this wrong because those intake and exhaust manifolds are on the wrong side. Was under the impression the EVO style block had them flipped.

Turn this motor 90deg and the manifolds are where I want them.

Yes, I know. The issue is still the intake manifold. Since the truck intake goes over the middle, it might fit. I don't know.
The exhaust manifold shouldn't matter. Worse case, go custom. Exhaust manifolds are easier to get made than intakes.
