I think they screwed something up on the dyno. There's no way on a naturally-aspirated motor they went from 460 hp to 650hp and gain a ton of torque with the same displacement as before. Just not happening.

Yeah, I'd like to see trap speeds. Weight + traps can't be fudged.

1/4 mile trap speed is 122, if I remember right. A trap-speed and weight based calculator is probably going to estimate higher than usual with the C8 due to the dual-clutch transmission.

That’s still not 650.

It doesn't matter what kind of transmission it has. The literal calculation for horsepower is how much weight is moved over a period of time. If the variables are accurate then the end result of the formula will be accurate. This calculator reads 502 hp based on the curb weight and leaked trap speed of 121.

It does matter because it is going to be putting power to the ground for more time out of the pull than either a manual or traditional auto trans. Maybe not significant, but it is there.

GM even hinted to them that the drivetrain loss is a lot lower than the 15% they were assuming. It doesn't have a driveshaft, so right off the bat it's going to be lower. 8% would get you right around ~515 at the crank. A lot more realistic. I'm guessing GM didn't give them a precise figure for competitive reasons, and because it's generating a lot of buzz for them.

This is why I really, really dislike assuming a flat percentage for drivetrain loss. I had some long and drawn out arguments about that on 3SI.

Long and drawn out arguments on 3SI?!? Nooooooooooo never!

it really doesnt though. doesnt matter what kind of transmission it has, you are measuring the amount of work the engine is doing, which is moving a fatass car 1/4 mile.

This looks a lot better. About the only thing I don't like is the extra little strake in the side vent. I hope someone actually builds something similar to this.

This is some nerdy shit that's probably only of interest to me, but I'm posting it anyway

https://gm-techlink.com/?p=12167

The new GM vehicle architecture has up to 9 separate CAN buses. Looks like automotive Ethernet fits in there somewhere too. They finally killed the old single-wire CAN (GMLAN) off. And they're expanding the role of the diagnostic gateway that sits between the OBD connector and the rest of the car. They started using gateways around 2017. The Germans have been using them for quite a while longer.

It'll be interesting to see what effect this has on modifications.

I'm going to assume that mods will be a ways down the road, if at all. I'm okay with that though - I'm finding myself rather disinterested in modding cars these days. If I get a C8, it'll just stay stock.

No surprise there. They still have to retool for the C8 before they can start production.

If I get one, it'll be a 2021 anyways. I don't think I'd want the first year of production.

Supposedly they still have to build a bunch more pre-production cars. They built something like 500 for the C7. They've been building a few C8s mixed in with C7s for a while now. So they'll finish C7, then re-tool for full C8 production. They'll work on getting the line up to speed by building the rest of those pre-production C8s before regular production customer builds start in Feb.

Are the preproduction ones the ones they send out to places to test that they have to be sent back? I remember OCC got to test one, and places like road and track? Just curious as you would think some changes may happen in those first ones.

Pre-production are supposed to be the same as final production. The only changes that occur between then and now will be fine adjustments and minor tweaks. All the big stuff should have been discovered back when they were testing the camoed cars.
