Have you ever taken apart the cable driven speedo on an early NA 3S? There's literally a flexible metal cable that goes all the way from the transmission into the back of the speedometer. The speedo gear in the tranny spins the cable which spins the speedometer needle.

The cable was bought brand new, so I'd be shocked if it broke somewhere between the cluster and the trans. Anything is possible I guess. The only thing I can figure is that the actual cable is slightly shorter than the sheath, so while all the sheathing and clips are attached correctly, the drive part of the cable isn't socketed all the way into the speedometer itself.

Long term I plan to convert it to an electrical setup, but I don't have the time or the desire to move on that project right now.

Check the spedo housing that connects to the cable. I picked up one that broke off right at the base. Didn't notice until I ran it. Spedo would sit still and then jump all over the place u til getting stuck again. I would pull it and inspect closely.

As with most old Mitsubishis, these trucks sometimes demand that you bring them the body of one of their dead brothers, so that they may consume its parts and become stronger. :brains:

There is a dodge raider stripped of all things inside and engine and painted. Would rock if I didn't have to source tons of stuff I don't know.

Ah yes. Nothing wrong with having a few odds and ends around. The trans and TC will be worth keeping should you ever have issues with yours. Will also be interesting to see if you can make the long bed fuel tank fit on yours. Should give you a couple extra gallons at the least.

How many parts cars do you have? :p I want this gone by the middle of February. If I'd have found this truck at a pick n pull, I'd have pulled all this stuff anyway. But I'd have spent 4x as much as I paid for this truck, and I wouldn't have the convenience of working on a driveway on my own schedule.

Even with her broken arm, Vira came along and was a huge help to me. We ran into some ridiculous problems when we went to drop it off. I'm glad she was there. :glee:

The seller said the trans shifted ok when it last ran, so I might just try swapping it straight into my truck. My 2nd gear snychro is long gone. We'll see.

I'm looking at anything besides the trans and transfer as 'free' parts. The body is shit, there's plenty of rust, and I don't want a long bed anyway. Aside from a couple of brackets, I've got no interested on anything related to the engine. So it'll be easy to junk.

The manual says the long bed tank is nearly 20 gallons. Short bed is 16. Worst case it doesn't fit and I scrap it anyway. Just gotta find a way to store it safely for a little while. Maybe I can find a way to do dual fuel tanks?

Once you account for the couple hundred pounds of extra weight in the body, it doesn't actually have a higher weight rating than the short bed. So I'm not going to bother with any of the suspension stuff.

Once you get to a point where you're ready to buy one, we'll find one. It should definitely be as complete as possible though. I just went to the trouble of buying a whole truck because parts for the V6s are not easy to find at all. By the time you're ready, I should have the 3.5L swap all ironed out. That'd be awesome in a little Raider :D

Kudos to vira for being super supportive in this!

I hope you are able to grab quite a few things in the process. If the new trans doesn't work let me know. I've got an extra 90' model.

I know. I really wanted yours, but given the distances involved I really couldn't pass this up.

It'll be really nice to be able to mock up the bell housing against my 3.5L before I put it in the truck. That should save me a lot of time and effort.
