Re: Going to need a tow/haul rig
debating on going to look at this:
https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/it ... 929be8b7e7
This is also an option and nearly 1/2 the price, but 70k more miles on it.

Re: Going to need a tow/haul rig
Definitely did like the crew cab option. Lowers payload a bit but does make access much easier. Going to see if I can find a crew cab 6.5 or 8ft bed HD for a price/condition I'm OK with.
Re: Going to need a tow/haul rig
Damn 200k miles is just a lot on a truck that’s actually used.
What happened to looking at much newer ones?

Still not out of the question, just keeping options open.

Re: Going to need a tow/haul rig
Kind of where my head is at with all this.
Wife is debating on trading in the Kia on something newer and nicer. She does like the Forester Wilderness, but also doesn't want a car payment. So she won't get one. KBB puts trade in at about $15k since such low mileage or about $17 for private party. So figure if they do give $15 for down payment we could put another about $10k, so we would be looking at mid 20s for something.
Out of curiosity, not that I am going to, but KBB puts my car at $37k trade in. It is too good of an all arounder though to event think about trading it in. I love it.
I had figured into our budget we could do another $20-30k total from our savings and be OK for a couple of years. That would give her 10 for her car, 10 for my truck, and 10 if she wants to redo the other bathroom as well (it should be, but doesn't need to be).
However, if I get a job (did have an interview Friday for a permanent state government job, and am in the qualification screening for another one that pays even more), plus have my coaching, and eventually teaming up and doing the gym thing for extra side income, we could easily do more because at that point we will have extra income on top of putting money into savings/retirement and everything.
So all that said, if I get that job, we could easily get at truck up to the mid 20s without issue. BUT, the bigger question I keep asking myself, is SHOULD I? I mean there are a lot of nice features on trucks for that price, but at the same time, this is just going to be an occasional tow/haul rig, so I still think limiting myself to around $10k, give or take a little, is more than enough for an older HD truck.

Re: Going to need a tow/haul rig
No you shouldn't.
Well if you feel like you HAVE to get a truck, I would:
1. Trade in the Subi on a newer truck that has the features you want and drive it daily as well.
2. Get a cheap beater truck for the once a month haul.
Spending a large amount of money on a second vehicle that will barely get driven is silly and a good way to waste money vs setting yourself up for the future. Personally, I wouldn't do either of them until you have a steady job.

#2 is where my head has been at. Limit to $10k max. I like the Subaru way too much to get rid of it. Arguably one of if not my favorite vehicles I have owned to date.

Keep looking at this too.
Only 2WD and a diesel. But fuelly puts mpg at 15 average over 10 of the 6.0. That is a big difference. Plus ext cab, 8 ft bed. Just not sure if the maintenance costs offset it.

Re: Going to need a tow/haul rig
Stop looking at high mileage vehicles. They will only be a problem.

Re: Going to need a tow/haul rig
High mileage is not that big of an issue out here because little to no rust, and trucks are meant to go to high mileage. Also, not spending the money required to buy a low mileage truck. Waste.

You are a mechanic. You can, will, know how to take care and fix your vehicles.
Jason that thing already had 250k on it and you are gonna drive something for very little and then sell it. You know it. Buy something that is worth reselling and use it for what you need and sell it.
Hell, the Tahoe we bought is worth more than what we paid for it. Do it right and it cost you way less.

That means nothing. If it was properly maintained mileage means nothing. I'll take a 250k mile Silverado that's been maintained over a 90k mile Honda that's had nothing.

Exactly. I have only been going and seeing stuff that has documented service history for the most part.
However after this weekend I am probably holding off on buying anything for the time being. Don't trust something else going wrong.

Yeah. Everyone takes such good care of their tow vehicle.

Don't know about your part of town but around here they do. Ever been stranded 500 miles from home with a big trailer and broken truck?

Serious question time. Holding off at the moment until I see what happens over the next couple of weeks. But 6.6 Duramax - Should I really avoid it? So many more available if I look at those as well as gassers.
