So the avalanche is in the garage right now because I had to take the covers off to haul car parts. Well I thought since it’s up here I will hook the trickle charger into the cig lighter and let it get nice and charged up.

Well when I plug it in the charger gives me the fault light. Which makes me wonder if I’m doing anything with the solar panel charger.

Thoughts?

Edit: on a side note I bought some GM side posts that will let me hook up a connector to the battery much easier than the stock ones.

Installed the new posts to give me access to the battery better. I also ordered a second trickle charger, one I can keep up where the truck is as it doesn’t park with everything else. This way in the cold months I know it will still start.

Would like to put a terminal on the escape as well, it’s battery is pretty hidden so I havnt looked at how hard it will would be yet.

Literally looks like it barely survived an avalanche.

My main goal is a 50-60s 1/2 or 3/4 ton and swap a junkyard LS in

For 900 do it! Trucks come in handy.

Been thinking about a regear this fall as I will go with bigger tires, and I do want to be able to tow my car easily. Was thinking about 4:10’s at first but the forums say 4:56’s offer a lot more towing ability and only loss about 300 more rpm over 4:10’s. Also would want bigger tires. Nothing with a lift but bigger tires plus towing I think gears are the way to go.

Thoughts? Brands?

How tall of tires? Are you doing a lot of highway driving? Is this your daily?

It’s got stock size that are dry rotted and wearing badly. So they need to go. I think I can get up to 33inch right now.

It really never drive on the highway but if they have a NG in 2022 I will be using it to tow the car. Don’t really care about mileage though. It’s not my daily but does get driven weeks or so at a time just to switch things up.

Never had a problem towing the Spyder on a trailer behind our original 2002 Avalanche with the towing package (3.42 ratio?). 33" tire is only like a 3% difference from stock (Z51?).

Honestly you saying that stuff was one of the reason I havnt worried about it. This is also a toy though and it would be fun to have the gearing there as well. Save the trans some too.

Not sure what your trans gear ratios are but Jeep guys recommend 4.56 once you get to 35's. Otherwise to start to sacrifice highway rpm for lower end torque/crawling. It would be pretty minimal high end loss with a 4.56 gear though.

Okay. Reading more and more. I just need 4:10’s. That should be plenty.

Just gotta figure out what all I need to buy bearing wise, and whatever else I need.

Steve, can you tell me what all I need when switching gear ratios minus the gears?

Front and rear gear sets, bearing sets, usually shims if it's a shim style differential to set bearing preloads, gear lash, and contact pattern.

Oh, and dial indicators, dial torque wrench to measure rolling torque, and a shitload of know how.

I’m taking it to someone to do the gears that has the dial indicators and what not. Just then looking at buying, there are kits with roller bearings and stuff like that, don’t know if I need all of that or not.

Yea dont do that yourself. A lot of time is put into getting the contact pattern just right. Screw it up and you can be looking at all new gears again. Even some of the so call pros still get it wrong. Find a good shop.

I think I’m sold on a duel battery, even if I don’t add some crazy electronic device to control charging/cut off when dead. Just how much better my windows roll up and down with a charged battery and how much longer it will take to drain with more battery will work. Plus I have been putting it on the trickle charger every now and again to top it off so hopefully I will not tax the system to hard.

Any thoughts?
