Yeah I think so IIRC Toyota wants $650 for the booster and master cylinder combo

Part of the problem is even if it costs me $3k to fix its still cheaper than sell it 'broken' and buying something else with similar capabilities

Man thats a lot of $ for an ABS system.

Is it possible to get it rebuilt? The 3rd gen Monteros had a problem with their electrically driven brake boosters, but it turns out you can rebuild them for a fraction of what it costs for a new or remanufactured one.

Now that I think about it, I swear they use parts from a Toyota for that...

Speaking of GXs, one of the owners here is about to trade his in on a new car. He says it's a worn out piece of crap. I was tempted to make him an offer on it

Toyota has 2 or 3 different styles of systems for their ABS/VSC in their truck based SUV's of this era. The GX and Land Cruiser use the reliable, but expensive one, with a hydro booster. The Sequoia uses the cheaper vacuum based one which breaks a lot. This shop has a 3 year 36k mile warranty on all work they do, so they basically only use OE parts.

The only thing that stop me from recommending you buy that GX would be frame rust. As long as it's not rusted even if it is 'worn out' it's still a hugely capable 4x4.

He's had it since new. 15 years and over 200,000 miles. Shocks are gone, interior is stained and smells due to kids. I can fix all that. I don't think it's rusty. KBB says trade in is 4k-ish. I'm betting I could get it for 5 or less. I just don't know if it's worth it. Vira is kind of into Hummer H3s based on primarily on the novelty.

Girls love Hummers. Not sure why?

I'd take the GX over a H3 all day long. The 4x4 system is awesome in it and it's very reliable. It's AWD with a locking torsen center differential. The ATRC system in it does a good job of simulating and locking front and rear differential. There are lots of great options for shocks and rear coil spring conversion (with and without lift). The 04 (based on the math I'm assuming that's what it is) doesn't have VVTi which means it is lower hp but doesn't have the somewhat problematic secondary air injection system.

5k? I'd go for it.

I'd pay 5 for it before I'd pay 2 for an h3

Yeah at 4k-5k I'd do it. You'll have to do the timing belt and water pump, shocks and a rear spring conversion but you'd have a great suv for winter.

Just heard from the shop. Basically they are pretty sure the booster sensors are on their way out... recommending replacing the booster to the tune of $1563+tax :d izzy:

Yeah unfortunately at the moment my plan is an LKQ booster and start seriously shopping again.

So what you're saying is I shouldn't buy a GX or a Gen3 Montero.

I owned the latter and wasn't all that impressed compared to gen 2 or 2.5. Mine had the ever common chirpy bird sounding ABS too at 150k miles. 4wd was nice, but my truck was pretty beat up. Ended up just gutting it.

I like the interior and exterior :d ontknow:

ABS is overrated.
