Do you have any photos of your external wastegate setup?

I have a bunch more of you want to see them. All attached to the car and what not. Both pre powder coat and after I think. They actually gave me tons of room. More than with the internal wastegates.

Yeah the cheaper jrink set up! His inspired me. In all reality back when I got these people talked about how bad ass open dumps sound. People are idiots. Open dumps not only do not sound good, then your car smells like exhaust. So much bull shit was spoken on 3si it pisses me off. Welded vcu drives fine is another huge pet peeve of mine.

Open dumps are ghetto as fuck, and I hate them for the reasons you mentioned. I saw Jesse's external gates, and wanted to do them on my new setup but decided to try the internal gates anyways. External would be a lot easier and more reliable, so I will probably redo them over the winter.

Should have done them to begin with, but didn't know what sort of clearances I would have to work with.

I had China turbos and so the wastegates sucked as well, but I did exactly what you did and mine would never seal. Ray could only get like 10psi out of them because of that. I shimmed them, adjusted them, and everything I could. No dice.

The car is much more responsive now and obviously holds more than 10psi.

What did you do with the internal wastegate flapper? Just take the flapper off, and leave the pivot arm and weld the arm open or something, or cut the arm out and weld the mounting hole?

There was a sleeve pressed into the housing that held the pivot part, I cut that off and pulled out any metal that would come, then welded that up. The flapper easily came out after I cut the other side.

Don't you want to close off the internal wastegate hole if you go to external, so all the flow is going to the turbine wheel?

What’s the difference between a flapper 2 inches in and the valve that is an external wastegates?

Ideally yes all exhaust flow through the turbo, but nothing wrong with this.

I forgot the TD05 housing has the turbine exit and wastegate exit separate. :d unce:

I was thinking the housing was like the stock TD04, in which case your setup wouldn't work.

Yeah, the ideal way to set this up would be to have the external gate off the headers instead of the O2 housings, but that's tricky to make fit with our limited space. The 3SX headers do that, but their design has "issues". Doing it this way has the disadvantage of having to use the exit path through the hot side, but the external gates usually have better flow than an internal gate setup since you can eliminate the flapper.

Just being able to clock the turbos however you want and not affect the wastegate mounting at all is gold.

Bought a valve stem for my wheels. Have one that leaks down once a week. Highly annoying and it’s the stem. 30 bucks!!!!

Anyways, hopefully that will keep me from having to check/air it up every time I want to take the car.

Also been thinking about my pvc system. When it comes to this I’m a minimalist. All you people with extra check valves and catch cans are nuts. My valve covers have just been strait vented for over 7 years. No oil residue, no moisture in the oil and this is a vented hood and outside all seasons. But I don’t like washing my hood with those knobs open. So I would like to get some rubber 90’s just so I don’t have to worry about it.

I’m gonna put the car in more of a driving rotation is my goal.

Drove to work this morning. 12.7psi and 1 count of knock. Damn it was hauling. I ran out of road so I couldn’t stay in it to see if it was gonna go higher than 12. On my blackstealth logger, when you go back to see high psi and any knock it showed the 12 and 1...but to the right it had some dots that step up. Curious what those are.

Had one tire that slowly lost air pressure. Would fill it up to 40, two days it would be down to 20. It was the valve stem. Oddest valve stem ever, it was metal with a 90 degree bend and to seal if it has an Alan head nut. It was 30 bucks for a new one. So they tried to just tighten the old one but it still leaked.

Anyways. Gave them the new one and took the old one. I am gonna try and see if I can find the gaskets to just rebuild it. I will take and post pictures as they are a little odd.

Bought a very low mile and perfect rear steering rack, lines, pump, and everything today. Meet the guy 2 hours to pick it up. Pretty happy. really gonna try to do my rear subframe like my front and I want to powder coat the lines and everything. Anyone know if they still sell the seals and stuff? Also what are the lines that run from the front of the car to the back made out of?

I haven't been under a VR4 recently, but I'd venture to say its just like standard hydraulic lines.

Is that a mild steel? Stainless? Aluminum?
