I really need to get a custom license plate for this truck. "PKNPUL" Virtually everything I've gotten so far has come from Pick N Pull, or similar yards.

I think I have a frame holder. It's a start.

This is one of my favorite threads right now.
Just fun seeing y'all save these two trucks.

This is my s10 i bought about 3 years ago. The only original parts other than the frame/drivetrain are the cab, rear window, seat, and rear bumper.
Literally everything else came from pick n pull or Craigslist.
Dash, power steering, tilt column, AC swapped in, lowering springs and spindles, grille, huge sway bars, etc....
Every week I haul 9-1200 lbs of scrap in. Handles it like a champ

The irony is you've probably hauled far more than that red lifted crew cab Ford in the background

Actually that's my bosses truck and he does use it.

Score!
99 Sport 3.5L axle with air locker. 99 was the only year that had both the 3.5L engine and the leaf spring suspension. Full size Monteros and 2000+ Sports are all coil sprung.
I didn't really want the locker, but it would have been more work to remove it, and it wouldn't have saved me much money. I can probably sell it for a decent amount. I got the pump and control module while I was at it.
Holy shit, these things are heavy.
I'll need to make a decision on gearing and pick up a front diff. There's a couple hybrid LSD equipped trucks in the yards, so I'll get one of those in a couple weeks.
I also scored an excellent condition spare tire on a Montero rim. It leaks around the bead, but that should be easy enough to fix up.

Keep that air locker. It's sought after

Awesome. I think you should take over axle duty . I have my hands full with the motor swap for now. The locker setup isn't bad. Just depends on what your overall plans are. The hybrid would be pretty cool.

I'm with Steve, keep the locker. It is amazing. Made my friends Montero Sport into a very capable off road truck, and it was only 2WD. To test it out after we installed it in his truck, we drove up on a snow bank, so that one wheel could free spin. Hit the switch for the locker, up and over no problem.
And yes, they are really damn heavy! I used my engine hoist to move it around and lift it onto jack stands when I was working on my friends.

My problem with the locker is that it's an open diff when it's not engaged. I'd really prefer an active LSD for rain, snow and ice.
Who knows....maybe I'll put it all in storage in case I change my mind later.

Wonder if it would fit in the front

Not even close. Supposedly a Starion LSD can go in the front. The front diff is similar in size to the 3S rear diff.

Yeah...'storage'. Like we did with the spare engine and transmission we have for your car.

Nice thing about a diff though is it can sit virtually unprotected outside.

Jeff,
Say you have a tube frame that can bolt in any combo of Mitsubishi, old or new, engines, trans, diff's....discribe your perfect 4x4.

That's what I'm close to building. A small, practical little truck that's good in snow, ice, rain, and some light off roading. 6G75 MIVEC with a 5 speed manual and a nice beefy axle to handle the torque.
Alternatively, I should have just sold everything and bought a 2015 Colorado. Then Vira wouldn't have to complain about her 'missing' husband.
