Hopefully it'll work better with one emulator instead of two. The way it's supposed to work is that you can leave the emulator hooked up without the laptop and drive it like normal. You replace the emulator with a flash EPROM chip once you finalize your tune.

Oh I'm good with doing that. Not too much different from hooking up the tactrix and everything. This is starting to get fun.

On an interesting note I had thought that I recognized the trashcan MAF plug as you call it. Turns out it's the same plug as the IAC. I hacked up an extra black one I had lying around. Now I need to decide if I want to go 3s for the conversion or evo. Leaning towards evo as that is where I will ultimately end.

I don't even have an ECU yet and you're already talking upgrades

I've learned one other crazy thing. At some point the Montero switched from distributor to coil packs. 92 maybe?

The ECU for that is MD175915. It's the same as your Max ECU. It's got a pad for an EPROM, but nothing populated.

So the ideal setup would probably be that ECU, and the code to run the distributorless ignition. I have a strong distaste for distributors. I'm not exactly sure why...

Thanks Jeff. That was one of the more difficult pulls I've had to do. Cramped quarters along with 4wd running gear and regular black widow hosts.

I pulled one of those in a hurry once. It was in a junkyard. Not fun, but at least I didn't have to deal with spiders.

We've been talking about so many things that I think I've lost track of where you're going with this. Are you going to run the SOHC engine with the EPROM ECU and then put in a flash ECU when you swap in the 3.5?

I ask because of the ignition system stuff I mentioned earlier.

Really matters how fast this develops butI do want to run the eeprom while Ive got the whole truck together. If it runs well I was going to ask if I could program it to run the mivec 6g75 I have been mocking up. Being that that motor was running when pulled, I want to install it in the MM. Is it possible to make it work? I was going to trace all the pinouts between the MM ecu and the 98. Off the top of my head the coils might be a slight challenge.

The 74 montero motor I want to install in the stealth as I will have to build the lower end no matter what. Then install the extra 75 crank and mivec heads. I just need to tear this motor apart to see how bad the damage is. If it's a lost cause I may decide on the 75 or grab another 74/75 motor at the Mitsu yard.

Don't let it fool you. Just a week ago it was an ice skate rink. The latest warmer El Nino storms have warmed us up to 40 deg.

That'll be an issue, as is the MIVEC stuff itself. I suspect the older ECUs have the hardware to drive the PTU, but as usual, we're lacking code.

It might be possible to write something using the code from the ECU MadDog had, but I don't want to make any promises there. It'd be a huge undertaking and not something I could do without a truck to test on.

If I end up doing the build I want, I'll be using the 4G Eclipse ECU.

We had better put a truck in your hands then. Why the 4g eclipse again?

Full factory control over the MIVEC stuff, as well as coil on plug and e-throttle. I think it'll make for a much cleaner install and lets you add cruise control. This is basically the engine project I had envisioned for the Spyder.

It's all just daydreaming at this point though. I need to get the truck, get the engine, figure out the reflash problem with the 4G ECU, or just buy that damn Russian reflash utility.

That would be quite a bit better. How much does the utility cost?

Something like $250-300.

Have you looked into service parts for this thing? Stuff like ball joints and bushings? How's the availability?

Not too crazy. I would be willing to split the cost with you if we could get it to work. Maybe by then some others might be willing to come on board and chip in too?

Haven't gotten too deep in it but the random idler arm that is MM specific was easily found and very affordable. Seems like a lot of parts interchange between other truck/suv models. For example the upper front control arms of 2nd gen MM just drop in and are an upgrade. Rear discs are supposidly a bolt on affair as well as the fronts. Love the commonality.

The things hard to find so far are some interior trim pieces.

The problem is that it's basically a USB dongle. We'd have to be mailing it around to each other :(

Could you reverse engineer the dongle?

LOL I was thinking that, but didn't want to be presumptuous.
