I never understood that logic.. how about putting the money for a better 3rd vehicle into a better first vehicle that wont break down?
You can't predict when something will break down. It's cheap insurance.

The vehicle that never runs right, you always bitch about, it takes up space in the garage (you can barely fit in to lift - seen the videos), that is a depreciating asset and so forth..

So since you want a better 3rd vehicle. I imagine that will be in the $7-8K range. Ballparking there. We already know your wife drives a new car, so you have one reliable vehicle. Add that $8K to what you paid for your truck and it would make that far more reliable (and most likely comfortable) as well. Oh yeah, and you would get your garage space back.

I don't get the money. We already talked about that. She paid for it with her own money back in 2007, and has paid for all the upgrades/repairs with her own money. I just do the work or find someone who will. Sure we share our finances and have a single bank account for main stuff. But we have separate savings accounts. 1 for vacation. 1 for school. 1 for misc/emergency, 1 for me to put away for things I want, and 1 for her to do whatever she wants. If/when we sell the jeep, that money goes into the account for her. I am not allowed to decide what happens to that money. She has indicated she might want to spend it on a trip, or use it as a down payment on a new vehicle.

That said, once I get a permanent job, and she is out of school and working, she wants to upgrade the Kia to something AWD, probably a Seltos. She does like those. It is basically the Soul with a bit more room, AWD, and everything she wanted in the Soul at the time she bought it. At that point, she said she will want to sell the Jeep, use it as a down payment on the Seltos and keep the Soul as our 3rd.

Well the more I drive it the less I'm convinced it's knock. Also I thought I was going to the total page when looking at king lift springs and shocks but it was the actual purchase page...those are on order... But might cancel it :d ontknow:

Piston slap or wrist pin noise. Both very common in Subaru.

Also somewhat common is leaving the grenade pin in the tensioner. Similar noise.

Yeah its only there for a bit between 2250 and 2750 when warming up. Goes away entirely when it's warmed up.

Probably piston slap I’d say. And once the pistons expand it goes away.

Tensioner failing and making noise is a common issue as well, even if you pulled the pin. Honestly it sounds like you have the same issue my forester has lol. It’s been like that for 6k miles. I’m convinced it’s the tensioner or valves out of adjustment. I have a new gates tensioner on it but I’ll be switching to an Aisin kit next time I mess with it.

Mine never goes away, it’s always there at that rpm range. It does it at idle but it gets a little louder when actually driving it and it’s under load.

That's your problem. I recommend Gates belts, but not our hydraulic tensioners (spring loaded are good), or our water pumps. Always OEM for hydraulic tensioners and water pumps.

I mean it could still be, just weird to have it fail in only a few hundred miles. Also I took it off and did the bleeding process or whatever (slowly compress it and release it 10 times with a vise) but I don’t see how that helps something that’s completely sealed, but the issue persisted.

I'm driving the Baja around today and stopped to pick up a curbside pick up at Target. The girl asked me if I wanted the items in the trunk :chin:
