The intermediate shaft is easy (1st, 2nd, reverse). It's the input shaft that's a pain in the ass. 5th and 6th are easy. You just have to be careful of that little ball in between 4th and 5th. The inner race from 5th gear has to be pulled off to access that little fucking ball. I use a chisel and hammer on the oil holes of that race to pop it off. I've broken 2 of those inner races out of like 50 times doing it. So I chance it in the name of speed/efficiency. Probably not the most careful way of doing it, but it gets the job done 95% of the time :p .

I had a chance to spend about an hour in the garage today, between family events... Finalized the rear waste gate relocation setup. Stripped the trans down partway. Enough to get the shafts out of the case(s).

Oh, I sorta kinda broke the oil guide on the endcase end of the input shaft while taking off the end cap. I forgot that was in there. >Doh!< . Guessing I'll have to glue it up or something, as I don't see anyone having them. I just poked through the back side of it, so I think it'll be okay after a little refurbishment. I might have an extra somewhere in my parts stash, but I'll have to dig through all that.

I'm also having a strange compulsion to paint the Spyder some form of metallic/pearlescent blue. Hmm.

Any thoughts on how to get the needle bearing for the reverse idler out of the end case? Thinking about it, I'm going to try a heat gun on the case to see if it'll expand enough to release the bearing. The bearing looks to have a steel sleeve around it that's pressed into the end case.

Also have to get the little caps out of the shift rail holes, and a steel sleeve that's pressed into one of the rail holes. That should be fun... Hoping heat will work there as well, I guess.

Normally, I wouldn't deal with this stuff - but I have a Broomfield billet end case that I'm putting on, and this stuff needs to get transferred over to it. Worst case, if I f*ck up the needle bearing for reverse, 3SX has them for $33, so not the end of the world I guess. The rail caps and sleeve - that's another story. Can't get those, as far as I can tell.

Heat is probably a good choice.

I did that bearing once. It sucks. You need a blind hole bearing puller.

There's still a high likelihood that you'll ruin the bearing anyway.

Just save yourself the headache and buy a new one.

I have the needle bearings in stock. Don't spend that much on them :p . $15 each plus $3.50 to ship.

rail caps are just freeze plugs. The last Broomfield end cap I put on came with a full hardware set that included the bearing, sleeve, and freeze plugs.

Well shit, I got my billet endhousing from you and there wasn't any hardware. :( Bummer for me...

Technically it came directly from Broomfield. So blame him if you can find him haha.

Managed to find the hardware bag for the Broomfield billet end case. Has a needle bearing and input shaft end cap, but no shift rail sleeve or freeze plugs. Guess I'll go on the hunt for that stuff... Off on vacation for 10 days starting Friday, so likely no more progress until I get back.

I believe you don't use the sleeve on his end case. From what I remember. It's been a year since I've put one of those together.

For sure have to use the sleeve for the one shift rail hole, at least on the version I have (if there are different ones - I don't know). I got mine out of the old end case by tapping a 10mm socket through the hole. It fit just right. Just used a rail to push out the freeze plugs, and pressed them into the new case.

Took apart the intermediate shaft, installed the 1/2 gear carbon synchros. Fit perfect, seem like they'll do the job. I'm headed to Target to get a little toaster oven to preheat the bearing races that have to slide over the shaft, and continue work today.

Like a dumbass, I took apart the reverse gear side of the intermediate shaft for no reason. LOL. Good to see that everything on that end was clean/good though, I guess. No dirt/grit/etc in the intermediate shaft, everything checked out fine on both ends.

Next steps: Input shaft carbon synchros, billet shift forks, front LSD, 300M output shaft, reinforced bellhousing. Pray that I have the right shims to preload everything correctly.

If I can finish the shafts today, I might start on dropping the motor back in to make room in the garage. My wife really is itching to buy a Camaro SS convertible, and we are a bit short on garage space at the moment with the Spyder and its parts basically taking up the equivalent of a 2-car garage.

I hate the little synchro balls and springs. Just saying...

Intermediate shaft basically done except for putting reverse back on. Ended up pressing the 1st gear bearing sleeve back on as the heat didn’t do the trick. Output shaft swapped. Lots of time spent looking for small parts that flew around the garage. May get back at it later tonight. Progress, though.

Fuck, fuck, fuck...

Anyone know of a source to get the damn synchro springs? The slider on reverse got bumped when I was pressing stuff back onto the intermediate shaft and the damn springs and balls went flying. I found one set, but the other two sets are MIA. Damnit...

Bought a 2018 Camaro SS Convertible though.
