Coolant system is pressurized, I wouldn't fuck with it.
They do it so it can run hotter, higher pressure = higher boiling point = more thermal capacity.
Ask me how I know.
RIP many, many 1.6L engines.

I just diagnosed two coolant systems this weekend. Get the $80 test kit from Harbor Freight and keep everything at room temperature. It's easy.

I notice the coolant smell on my ST from time to time. No coolant leaks, and the coolant level has always been good. Same engine you have. Baffles me too. Only thing I can think of is the tank and cap dont expand and shrink st the same rate and some smell seeps by the threads :d ontknow:

I have the tester just not the adapter for the ford screw on cap. I love it for the vr4.
Yes 1.6 engines had real issues with it. I need to get the adapter so I can quit stressing over it.

I havent read much honestly. Outside of normal DI stuff. Had no issues with mine up to 56k. I always run premium gas even though itll run on 87. I routinely get 30mpg in my Focus, but it is 2wd. However its geared really short. So Id expect youll get better mileage if you dont drive it hard.

Eh. Ive been driving it pretty easy and only getting 25mpg and have to work to get that.
I did just read up that I can go to a 255 tire instead of the 235. Thats a long way off but deff will get that wider tire when time.
People have talked about better gas mileage with premium. I figured I would try it out next gas tank. Do you have any mods? I was thinking of air filter.

Cobb CAI, Injen cat back exhaust, and a rear motor mount. If I do any additional mods, itll be an Accessport with custom tune, and an aftermarket FMIC.

Ive read a lot about this rear motor mount. We have the same one. Are they just really shitty?

They improved them in 2015, by putting the motor mount from the Electric Focus on all models of the Focus. Not sure if the same thing happened to the Escape or not. The original ones were really quite bad, and while the 2015+ is an improvement, an aftermarket one is even better. Though I'm not sure if it is needed for an Escape.

So I did add some coolant. What a bitch as even my longest funnel cant go in the overflow. So its gotta be held at the edge and barely poured in.
I filled it to just barely the low line. I drive it over 50 miles and it is lower than that line now but I smell less coolant.
Im gonna top it off again as maybe it just settled or maybe the vehicle wasnt cooled down all the way when I looked.
Aaron, for your smell, take on and off your cap. First time I took mine off it was a bitch. Second time was still kind of hard. 3rd time it went on and off like it was suppose to. Im curious if the cap wasnt sealing and letting the smell of coolant out. Im sure thats not it but it deff had not been off in a long time.

Lol. Kind of want to pick up a blown 1.6l and put in a fuel injected 5.0.

Changed the plugs today. Went with a heat range cooler. It was a very small hesitation at around 1500-1700 if I let it lug. That went away.

Steve, can you tell if this will work for the escape. I think it will but want another set of eyes on it.

Figured out the code for the door today, also figure out the wifes and then changed them so they are the same. Just never dug too deep into hers but once I found mine I couldnt just stop. Lol.
Still need to pressure test the coolant, change trans and cent diff fluid and I will be good.

Dude the door code is why I stick with Ford cars, I love being able to lock that shit and pass stuff off through the key code.

Yeah my wife loved the door code for running. She could put her wallet and grh key in the center console, so they were hidden, and then lock and unlock the Explorer with the door codes. Made it so she had to carry way less stuff with her when she met people to run.

Yup. Ive been meaning too, just never did. Mine was easy to find. Her I had to use both of her keyless fobs and what not. But now they are both the same code. I need to get another key made and when I do Im tempted to just leave it in the car. Lol.

Nooo.
I've heard of too many people breaking into the car and driving off with it.
