I would think the insurance company decides where to unload the car once it totals it out... and I'm sure they'll place it wherever they can get the most profit regardless of hazards.
Where does a car go while it's waiting for the insurance company to inspect? Like, when the tow truck driver leaves the accident scene with the car, he has to store it somewhere... does it just sit at the tow lot--blood, guts, brains and all--until the insurance company says to sell it to the junkyard?

Sits at tow lot or body shop. Sometimes police impound.
As for where the car goes after insurance....goes to auction. Highest bidder gets it.
Pick n pull type yards don't typically pay more than 4-600 per car.

I've bought a couple biohazard cars. One 97 vr4 got t-boned so bad that the rocker was into the center console. The driver's shoes were still by the pedals and there were 2 white sheets in the car that looked like they were probably for covering the bodies. The other was a Stealth ES that was also t-boned. I had to cut the center console apart just to get out the ECU. It had some blood splattered all over the inside. Em hates it when I buy those

White sheets are used also to protect the driver when we are cutting on the car. Only thing it really does is stop glass from getting on them and make everyone think we are getting a dead body out.

And other paperwork/bills. Especially when I raided my old coworker's 3S that she didn't sell to ME but to freaking p&p for at least half as much. It's amazing how people not only keep so much personal shit in their car, but don't even clean it out before selling it...even for junk.

I dunno. Passenger compartment looks mostly intact.
I got a few more good ones on Friday. I'll try to post them tonight.
There was a red 94 R/T there too. First time I've seen one of those in a self service yard. Front bumper was smooshed pretty good though. Would have made a nice 2G conversion for someone otherwise.

I love finding tools. I hate losing tools in them though. I also saw a 91 TT two months ago. First I have seen a TT. I recently saw two 97 3000gt in a yard. In fact J-Groove got a great black Active Aero spoiler off one this weekend.

Damn. I wish I could find a turbo here. I'd like to get some front knuckles and a few other misc parts.
