yesss... Land/Range Rovers are amazing... I was a tech for a summer at a land rover restoration shop and I recently sold my 96 discovery :( They are huge and weigh alot, and often have a ton of electrical and engine issues that are a pain in the ass to fix... but they are AWD with locking diffs... not to mention the body is all aluminum and they can show up any/all jeeps when offroading ;) haha
The 50's to late 70's series land rovers are by far the most amazing land rovers ever made*

The defender 90 is a real nice Land Rover, I wouldn't say that it's my favorite.. it's got a small wheel base (90 inches)... and the frame isn't galvonized like all other land rovers... but if there was one for sale in my area... I would buy it... I miss my rover :( The shop that I worked at dis-liked the defenders... so those happen to be the one model that I could use some brushing-up on...
How much power? It'd be an interesting run for a Grand Cherokee SRT8.
Sounds like it would... doesn't it... It wouldn't.

There was a test between the Range Rover Sport (390 hp), Cayanne Turbo (450hp), SRT-8 (420 hp), the BMW X5 4.8i (355 hp) and the Trailblazer SS (also 390 hp), and the Jeep down right MOLESTED all the others (even the Porsche). The Jeep ran flat-13s, none of the others even got into the 14s. It even out handled the Porsche... they went so far as to say that "the Jeep SRT-8 is what the Cayanne should have been."

Well... the range is about 6000 pounds... haha... so I dunno if it could ever make it into the 13's.... either way... I love both jeeps and rovers.. I def. want one of each, and that way I can compare them and report the strengths and weaknesses of both :D

Definitly hard core machines... (not sure about the sporty versions of either, but the normal Land Rovers and the good Jeeps (because now they make 2wd soccer-mom cruisers), are pretty hard).

Anyway, results from R&T were:

Quarter-Mile & Trap:
Jeep SRT-8: 13.2 sec @ 104.1 mph
Porsche Cayenne Turbo: 13.9 sec @ 101.2mph
Trailblazer SS: 14.3 sec @ 97.6 mph
BMW X5 4.8is: 14.5 sec @ 95.6 mph
Infiniti FX45: 14.6 sec @ 96.3 mph
Range Rover Sport: 15.0 sec @ 93.5 mph

Slalom (700 ft) / Lateral Acceleration:
BMW X5 4.8is: 63.7 mph / 0.78g
Jeep SRT-8: 63.5 mph / 0.85g
Porsche Cayenne Turbo: 63.5 mph / 0.83g
Infinity FX45: 63.0 mph / 0.85g
Trailblaser SS: 60.9 mph / 0.81g
Range Rover Sport: 56.8 mph / 0.79g

Jeep = $45,630
Porsche = $95,800 also = [owned]

Road & Track wrote:In outright speed, it (the SRT8) flat spanked every vehicle here... Apparently this is what happens when you strap a raunchy-sounding 6.1-liter V-8 with 420 bhp and 420 lb.-ft. of torque to a 4800-lb. all-wheel-drive vehicle. Four-wheel powerslides come standard.
