Re: Rants...fun
Well he wants to charge me freaking $286 for a stock replacement one... I would be buying an upgraded one later anyway.
The $700 in labor doesn't bug me in the least. I think you have my thoughts confused. I'm more worried with the $1900 in parts he came up that need to be replaced.

WOW! My condolences.
Threads like this makes me glad I do my own work.
If it makes you feel any better, a friend of mine recently had a sop do an engine build on E36 M3, just under $12,000.

Car is in the shop ripped apart.
The $1700 dollar trans rebuild turned into $2600 all of a sudden...joy.
I'd rant more, but I have to...work.
My car's at the shop also.
New Clutch and transmission turned out to be $1300 with labor...knowing the mechanic FTMFW.

Whenever you use forceful and overt verbal persuasion to try to convince others to see things your way, they're probably not listening to what you say, Instead they're looking for every error in you your logic and mistakes in your facts, all the while constructing counterarguments. Worse still, they don't merely believe you're wrong; they need you to be wrong in order to protect the status quo. And since the final judge exists in their own head, you lose every time. - The Influencer
Is the level of bullshit you have to go through to change things in a direction you want, less than than or equal than the level of current bullshit?

Never again. I was scared to do it because I'd never done more than replacing rotors and changing oil, but let me tell you, for the amount I'm being raped for right now, I will NEVER let someone else work on my car again. I wish there had been someone around to watch me do this myself.

Don't be afraid, the most I had ever done before my motor build was suspension work. I had helped with a motor swap before as well.
The best thing to do is just have faith that you can do it. It will take a lot longer, since I was paranoid about doing everything right the first time plus had a busy school schedule with 21 credits it took me over 5 months to complete.

Re: Rants...fun
I actually bought my first tools that weren't meant for computer repair.
Mechanical tools. I've gone down the path. I'm not planning on turning around.
I can't find that Transaxle tear down PDF that I know exists. I searched 3SI, anyone know where it's linked?
I plan on posting up all the items he's listed for replacement in my Transaxle when I get back from there tonight. I know I won't know what half of it is. I'm hoping for feedback.
Honestly 4 months ago I didn't know what a synchro was much less that it was in my transaxle, or the fact that I had a transaxle and why that was different from a transmission.
If you get bored enough, go look at my first posts on 3SI in November of last year.
I'm learning.

Re: Rants...fun
So..a shop says "$1600 for a rebuild", then tears it apart and wants another $1000 or something?
I bet if you say "no", he'll still charge you $1600 just to put the thing back together.
How the hell people like that stay in business is beyond me..they should be put in jail.

Re: Rants...fun
We already discussed the $700 labor rate. I figured out that the 1st shift fork needs to be replaced. Those are hard enough to get as I understand. I was going to post the whole list of what's being done, but my total is now just under $12,000. I'll have to do it when I get home if I don't end up going to my second job.

From $1700 to $2600 to just under $12,000? Did you decide to have the internals platinum coated?

My first transmission rebuild, expecting $3500, turned into almost $7,000. That was in 2000, I think. Give or take. And lo and behold, it lasted a tick over 12,000 miles...less than a year and a half.
But something miraculous occurred...was it a wrinkle in time? Or did I just get fucked? My 1993 TT turns out to have an 18 spline transfer case. Which, a short year and a half later, strips the output shaft. And is, by all accounts, an impossibility, by my build date, if I have been informed correctly.
Methinks fuckage occurred. Any guess as to which shop dryreamed me? Here's a hint...An Awful Mess, it was.
Second tranny...turned into almost $5,000, between the dumbasses removing it and re-installing it, having it shipped from TRE, having parts from Kormex sourced...and the new output shaft and upgrading the yoke for a 25 spline.
That's been almost 80k ago...so far, so good.
sound slike you were fucked.
they teased you with lube but didnt provide any.
Fucked, hard. And the hard way.
Suspect they got tired of me asking when it would be done (after almost four months) and slapped in a used junk transmission...with an 18 spline. Didn't find out until the next rebuild...barely over a year later.
Bastards.
