How about this, this one is high mileage at a dealership with a shop that said it did everything it needs,

We are also going to try and talk him down a bit. I am going to run a carfax once I get the VIN from him.

When looking at the Camrys ther eis nothing wrong with the V6, but the 2.2L I4 (5SFE) is a tank of a motor and runs forever, I'd opt for that one if I could, plus parts are cheaper for it.

I don't know if any will be in your area or how cheap they are, but if you can find 80's 300SD diesel Mercedes those are some of the most reliable cars ever made. They are slow, but get good gas mileage (30+) and are pretty comfortable, plus you can get 400-500,000mi no problem with regular maintenace. you can find them for $1000-1500 down here all the time.

those old mercs are tanks. you could feel very safe with your wife driving one. a few friends in HS had them because they were safe, more than slow enough to keep the kids out of trouble, and very reliable so the rents liked em for a first car.

honestly, i can't believe you even considered the VW from a safety standpoint alone.
