They've sold ~46,000 of these things since launching in late 2023. They sized the plant for 250,000 per year, and Elon predicted they'd get over 500k.
Even with discounts and the $7500 tax credit, they can't come anywhere close to even the low end of that wishful thinking.
https://electrek.co/2025/03/20/tesla-co ... discounts/
In any normal company they'd fire a CEO who botched a high profile launch this badly. Especially when it's their only completely new car in the last 7 years.

To think they'd sell 500k a year ever was just asinine to begin with. No market research would show that at all. There are 800k F150s sold/year, something like 1.2 million Chevy/GMC combined a year, and 500k Ram 1500s. To think the truck market wanted the Cybertruck is a joke, and even if truck people bought one, to think it would displace 20% of the established market is laughable at best.

I've despised him since long before it was cool.
It's funny how some of the people at work thought it was because "Jeff like noisy car, Jeff no like EV".
I think they're finally starting to get it. It never had anything to do with EVs at all.

Ditto on all of this.
I wonder if he bought into the online idiotic hype - kind of like a supercharged version of the "Oh if they brought the M5 Wagon here I'd buy it in a heartbeat!" crap you always see from people who would never buy it at all.

The deposit system didn't help. It was mostly people who wanted to flip one for profit, and a bunch of dreamers who were never going to convert into real sales even at the initially promised $50k price point.

Yeah I mean even if you look at the previous conversion rates on the other model pre-orders they were fairly low, less than 50% IIRC. This failure is on a whole different order of magnitude.

Someone's overcompensating.
