Whenever you use forceful and overt verbal persuasion to try to convince others to see things your way, they're probably not listening to what you say, Instead they're looking for every error in you your logic and mistakes in your facts, all the while constructing counterarguments. Worse still, they don't merely believe you're wrong; they need you to be wrong in order to protect the status quo. And since the final judge exists in their own head, you lose every time. - The Influencer
Is the level of bullshit you have to go through to change things in a direction you want, less than than or equal than the level of current bullshit?

You should style it after one of my favorite trucks :-)

Uhh...no. While I admire the level of skill it took to build that, my truck is going to continue to be a truck.

Anyway, I finally got mine out on the freeway for the first time. I ran up to the junkyard to get a hood and a rear lower sill for the bed. It wasn't just 'not terrible'. It was actually pretty good. Everything under this truck is worn and I'm pretty sure the shocks are factory original. They're blown out and even the bushings are falling out. And it's still decent. If it's this good now, how good will it be with new shocks and bushings, an alignment, and new, balanced tires?

While I was at the junkyard, I ran into this guy. The McFly Hilux

His looked a little more optioned out than mine, but mine had one thing the Toyota was sadly lacking.

Zero rust :D

I've never been a fan of putting US military graphics on Japanese cars. If I was going to do that, and if I had a death wish, I'd go with something Mitsubishi actually built.

Let me know if you ever get your tires to balance well. I tried to do mine and they tend to wobble at high speeds still. Can't tell if it's because the rears lact centering ring or if my old les Schwab tires suck. Otherwise the suspension is quite nice.

My buddy that owned the H1 said they will put something inside the tire, where the air goes, that will balance big ol tires. He said he couldn't get his tires balanced until they did that.

I had an itch to scratch, so I emailed about the Craigslist 04 Montero. It's an overheat. Won't turn over.

It might be worth 1900 if I wanted to repair it or part it out. I have zero interest parting it, and that's too much to pay for a DOA engine even if it does have all the accessories and electronics intact.

I'll cross my fingers that it ends up at one of the Pick N Pulls.

Every once in a great while, you catch a break.

Since I can't seem to stop copying Steve with this whole truck thing, I've been chasing a set of the Montero wheels he's got.

Image

Well, a set popped up at one of the yards. They were all but gift wrapped. All 4 were just laying there, waiting to be picked up.

Image

Literally 10 feet away right outside the door after you pay. I got there at 7:50 this morning, was out by 8:05, and made it to work by 8:30. Even got the center caps. Fortunately I looked in the back seat.

The tires are shit, but so are my current ones. I'm hopeful that I can flip my current 80s era wheels on Craigslist and come pretty close to breaking even on this deal :D

Haha you weren't kidding. Someone did all the hard work and left them right there. My luck, someone would have taken the last one and stashed it in some far corner of the yard. You seriously cannot find a complete set of any wheels anymore. Good job! Did you get the spare too?

You are going to enjoy these. They make your truck look a lot better.

There was no spare to be had. I'll keep the steel one I have.

I think the yard guys took the wheels off when they laid it out. It was sitting pretty low. You're right about getting full sets though. It's tough, which is why I jumped on these.

You going to grab upper control arms along with calipers and rotors?

Not yet. I'd really like to get 100% confirmation that the upper arms will fit, and then buy brand new ones. If I could find a source for the inboard bushings, I'd just rebuild junkyard arms.

It seems like half the info out there is for a 1st gen. So I'm getting a ton of mixed messages on the 2nd gen stuff, and then the 4x4s are even more rare. So we end up with wasted money and time like what happened with the seats. Same shit with the rear diff. I do not know, specifically what axle parts will work with my LSD and gear ratio, so I'm not spending $200+ along with a lot of hard work, to be wrong. Which really sucks, because there's seven Sports near me right now.

As for the brakes, I'm holding out for a full size 2nd gen. The front rotors and brackets are slightly thicker than the sport parts.
