FWIW, I hated towing with the DFW Ram 1500 I had for the ORV job. Just towing a light trailer/side x side, and it struggled. Especially on the mountain passes. Down low it was ok when the transmission wasn't acting up, but the F150 and Silverado 1500 I occasionally got to use felt better to me.

Could have been just a bad truck (which I was told by maintenance it was and no one wanted it - was constantly in the shop under the previous responsible party) but I have been burned enough personally by Fiat/Chrysler in the past I refuse to buy any Dodge/Ram/Heep/Chrysler/etc and have known people who have switched to GM/Ford and are much happier.

But to each his own. Steve seems to have good luck with his, but personal experience for me has been nothing but trouble.

I still think you are adding too much stress on yourself over the gas tank thing.

That said, you clearly need a Raptor.

I don't know if you can get this in the US, but it might solve your fuel capacity problem.

The EPA considers the gas tank as part of the emissions system you aren't supposed to replace it with a different one.

So much for that idea. Today I learned diesels don't have evaporative emissions systems.
I think about all the things we could have done, all the miracles we could have achieved, if we were all just a little bit better than it turns out we are.

Yep, but sometimes the diesel and the gas version share a tank and their fuel pump assembly bolts in... so you can change them out. I looked into it on the Titan XD

Yeah the GM 6.2 trucks have a lot more low end torque, but GM only believes in tiny fuel tanks. I'm sure the 6.2 towing is going to get like 8mpg and on a 24 gallon tank that's just not enough range for my comfort. Yes, Frode I'm going to stop before I run out of gas anyways but I don't want to have to get gas every stop.

I dont expect the 6.2 to get great gas mileage, but at least a 1 ton sized engine in a smaller, more manageable truck.

I like the newer Rams (2015+). They have the best driving characteristics, but I do think that the coil springs dont perform quite as well as leaf's or airbags. There is an option for airbags on the Ram however, or you can install after the fact. Mine has the tow package, with the 34 gallon tank and brake controllers. Even the flashy fold out mirrors. :D . I did however opt for the highway 3.55 gears instead of the 4.10's you could also get.

I would agree with you on most Chrysler stuff pre 2015, but they have done a better job since. What year was your Ram? I know those early transmissions (Pre 2015) were not as impressive. I really like the 8 speed Fiat unit. I know fords have had their issues with the 10 speed.

I want to say it was a 2012 or 2013.

As for ford 10 speed, my current DFW truck has it, ok so far. But a rental I had with it when driving from here to SoCal gave me some issues a couple of times. Like it would not shift out of neutral.

Yea the early 6 speeds arent impressive. Lot of older tech.

The 10 speed is a nice idea, but there are appear to be a fair amount of issues and failures reported online. I think the most recent variants have had problems address however, but time will tell.

:lol: I actually like how they drive, look and feel. I'm somewhat skittish about the reliability of a Fiat Truck... err I mean RAM. I know Ram (like GM) has cylinder deactivation reliability concerns, and have exhaust manifold issues too.

Ford and GM seem to have issues with the 10spd transmission like you mentioned and the Ecoboost seems to still have cam phaser issues too.

I think you are just fine with everyday use and some towing. Ive only got 40k miles on mine, but its been problem free except for the bad thermatic clutch out of the gate.

I did a lot of research on the cylinder deactivation and it appears the problem seems to be tied to people extending oil changes or excessive idling on a regular basis. Supposedly upgrading the oil pump to the larger 6.1+ fixes all those scenarios. I believe its a bolt on affair.

For the manifold studs i plan to get some ARP studs and some headers. Mine are still fine, but i think those studs were undersized for the massive weight of the stock manifolds.
