I went out to test drive this today. That was really all I wanted to do. It didn't work out that way though. I'm a Ford owner now.



2017 F150 XL. 2.7L EcoBoost, 4WD, not much else. Just the way I wanted it. This thing looks like it has 5100 miles and not 51000. It's really that nice. I was going over the financing with the sales guy and originally thought I'd sleep on it. Then I literally said fuck it, let's do it. Most of the other trucks I've been looking at have been way too far away, and in boring colors, and with way more miles. There's no way I'm going to have another one like this fall into my lap. It was 20 minutes away from home.

Maybe it'll be like the Spyder and the idea of owning one will end up being better than the reality. Who knows? But at least I will know, instead of wondering.

Fun fact. It was built right here in Kansas City. Didn't realize that until I saw the sticker on the windshield.

I reminds me of the old 99-ish Lightnings.



I'm not a big fan of the rims it has. Maybe I can find something in a similar style to those old Lightning rims. I'm betting I could find someone to do a straight trade.

There's a couple things I want to do to it, but that will wait another couple months until the Corvette is paid off. In the meantime I'll keep an eye out for a deal on an LCD gauge cluster, and I might put some steps on it. But it's pretty much fine the way it is.

I think Ford makes all the XL trims in KC. At least that’s what I found from the research we did when my buddy bought his.

More pics and some observations.



It looks like the mesh grille is held on over top of the factory grille with double sided tape. It's gonna be a real pain in the ass if I decide to remove it.



I love that this has body colored bumpers.





Interior is in great shape. Weather Tech floor mats came with it. I'm not sure it matters though. It has vinyl floor covering! That's not a problem. It was just surprising.



There's some very minor stains on the passenger seat. I might see if I can steam clean it. It's barely noticeable though. The glove box door feels cheap as hell.





How is this a midwest truck? It's the stark opposite of the Hummer.

Other misc thoughts. Android Auto doesn't work on the Sony head unit. I think it's just that the wrong USB output is hooked up. It also has a little Rockford Fosgate amp under the passenger seat. It looks like there was a small sub installed. Kinda weird to take the sub, but leave the amp and the head unit. I might put one back in once I decide if I'm going to put a Sync system in it.

It also seems to have an auto start/stop disable. It looks like that's could be as simple as a harness with a little microcontroller integrated in it. I'll find out when I pull the dash to check that USB output.

I really, really hope they didn't cut the dash harness. The whole install is really clean, and the steering wheel controls still work, so I'm hopeful they used a proper adapter harness.

It was dry out today, so I got to get on it a bit. It moves really well. It's surprisingly loud too. The exhaust looks stock, so maybe that's just how they are?

It's pretty cool so far.

Ford trucks are pretty loud. My 250 xlt 6.2 is throaty when you get on it but my dfw xl 5.0 is definitely louder.

As for the weather tech mats, let me know what you think of them. I took mine out because they were too slippery for me. Previous owner put them in but my feet would slide all over. Threw in my Taz mats from my first truck back in 2002 that I still have. Slide around a lot less.

At some point in the F150 especially the Ecoboosts they added in sounds from speakers. Now I'm not sure if the aftermarket stereo deletes that or not. I do know you can turn it off with Forscan.

Side note - those rims aren't too bad. I think darker rims fit that truck better than the lighter old Lightning rims personally. Breaks it up a bit. As for steps - unless it is tall (kind of hard to tell) I wouldn't do it. You will just step around them and keep hitting the back of your leg on them. I do use the ones I have on the Jeep but it is a bit taller I think.

Also.. the "fuck it" part of the trip to the dealer sounds exactly like me when I bought the Jeep. We were literally going there just to test drive it - I didn't even drive the CTS for the trade-in and had to go home and get it!

Does it just not work, or is it like auto selecting it off? On my RS when the auto start/stop stopped working, it was because the computer thought the battery was not good enough anymore. There was a reset I did to reset the battery monitor and now it works like it did when new.

As for the weather tech mats, let me know what you think of them.

The WT mats in the Hummer get pretty slippery too. We'll see what happens. If I put a center console in this thing, I'll probably have to take them out regardless. It's actually one big mat that goes all the way across. The console would trap it permanently. I'd cut the center part out, but the floor doesn't even have the little floor mat anchors. Probably because it's vinyl.

I noticed that when I was looking at some Forscan stuff. There seemed to be some confusion around which trims it was actually on. I'm really trying to avoid going down that rabbit hole for now. I have other stuff I really need to get done first.

When I start it up, the disable icon is already active on the dash. If I hit the button, I get the message saying it's turned on, and the icon goes away. I didn't drive it long enough after that to see if it would actually shut off. It starts strong, so I don't think it's the battery.

My RS always started strong too. I do know they make things to disable it though, so like you said, it likely has one of those.

Ford's work the same way. There are a bunch of criteria that has to be met to get it to shut down. On an F150 with it, you can turn the steering wheel slightly while it's off, and it will restart.

I dont mind it on the truck. Annoys me but used to it kind of on the subaru. Subaru is a hard start and shakes the car pretty good but the ford is smooth.

I have zero issues with it on the Jeep and the BMW. Just took a little bit to get used to but once I got past that, it is fine. Super easy to keep the engine running if I want to be able to move fast to jump a gap etc.

Frankly - willing to bet that most people who get annoyed by it also get annoyed by anything else that saves gas etc. "So what if the engine is more powerful! If it isn't a V8 I don't want it! )(@(&@#(@) government!"
