“Safety features”

Post by DCIV »

Or should I say, self driving.

No not Tesla.

What does everyone think about their lane corrections, auto braking, and so forth?

The Tahoe is nice but a little more powerful at the lane corrections than I would like. This rental car is a armoda and I hate its back up stuff. I could not get out of a driveway without tons of it slamming on the brakes because of tiny flowers. Now I’m sure I could turn it off, but turn it off to just turn it back on? I just was NOT impressed. I couldn’t even turn on the brights myself without holding the switch on. I would love my next car to have a lot of these functions but also don’t want them to be just so over protective that I can’t drive!

I love the eyesight system on the subaru. Only use lane correction/self steering on long freeway drives. Other than that, everything else is great. I know Danielle is not a huge fan of the RAB because it activates if she gets too close to a bush, but mine is permanently deactivated because of the tire carrier. But FAB, adaptive cruise, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, etc. I love it all. Allows me to enjoy driving without being as nervous when around other dumb drivers. For instance, I love my F250 but it doesn't have any of those features so it is a more interactive drive at times. Which is not a bad thing. But on long drives especially after a long day, that 2nd set of "eyes" is nice to have.

Our Explorer has adaptive cruise, lane keeping assist, but it doesn't have any auto braking stuff. It does have warnings though if it thinks your going to hit something (parking sensors, and a forward collision warning). All of them can be adjusted, and all but the forward collision warning can be turned off. The lane keeping assist is only on for long highway drives and set to the lowest sensitivity and lowest amount of correction. The adaptive cruise is always on, but set to follow at the closest distance (which is still pretty far IMO). The forward collision warning is set to the lowest sensitivity, because even at that setting it can be a little over zealous. I like all the features for the same reasons Jason said. It took some getting used to initially, but they are nice.

I dont have any of that stuff, however we have been test driving some cars and I actually like a lot of the current gen stuff. Hyundai/Kia has a nice all around setup on their top models. You can permanently turn certain features off in the menu.

We have eyesight on our outback and I really appreciate it when on 2 lane highways. I'll set a speed im okay with, but if a slower car is in front of me it just paces them without any effort from me.

My experience with them is mostly positive. I have an ex who lets me use her 2020 Honda Pilot sometimes and I like how it works. The lane keeper assist and warming is a little annoying at times, but not too bad. Had a Tesla rental and the auto braking tried to brake a couple times on the freeway with nothing in front of us a couple times on a road trip. Did not like that at all.
