But not the actual work I’m doing or the model A. Noted.

I'm just poking fun Coop. You're doing quite well with the restoration.

Don’t know why it’s sucking SOOOO much fuel.

Talked to the main carb guy. He says it makes no sense. Didn’t have a carb I could test.

I bought smaller line and everything to maybe slow it down. That’s not how carbs work but he said maybe the float isn’t as fast at shutting off the flow as it should with that line. Also said he’s never seen a model A with clear hose so he doesn’t know how fast it should go down.

Either way, pointless but I’ll try.

Got another belt, 3rd belt. 1st I couldn’t get around the crank pulley. Second I went for a skinny belt…but if the belt sits down in the V more than it needs to be shorter. So 3rd belt.

Also got some anti freeze so I can finally see how this water pump is.

Also now I know how to replace the throttle spring.

So lots of little things to do.

Are you sure the bowl on the carb was already full of fuel - or was the increased fuel flow because it was sucking more fuel into the bowl to fill it?

Because it’s a gravity fed, but updraft carb, if I didn’t have the fuel bowl right then it would come out (they call it the throat) the intake. It does not.

Was gonna fill with radiator fluid so I could get an idea of the water pump….hoses leaked and can’t tighten the clamps. So need new hoses.

Image

See the spring behind the manifold? That’s the throttle return spring. Mine was broke. I tried to put this on last time and failed. Miserably. Turns out, I have to take the rest of the floor out, take off the bracket, rotate the arm 180 degrees and then reinstall. If this has been a 1929 model I would be pushing a pin out and reattaching it later. This was much easier.

The back of the key switch

Image

Don’t think Henry ford used electrical tape.

Image

So this is what I think happened. The part that goes from the key is silver, the wire in the middle is copper, the part that goes back into the distributor is silver. So it must have been grounding out and they cut it open to replace the wire.

Works…but not right and looks horrible.

Gonna send it off to be fixed.

Also did some work on the tank and am just gonna get a new carb, don’t know what to do with this one.

Let’s talk gas tanks. well for anyone reading this.

Image

This is sludge. I thought it was rust, but it’s not. I got a pressure washer to move some of it. Tank actually looks pretty okay minus some rust up top. This is just sludge that I need to desolve.

From reading online it looks like denatured alcohol will do it. It’s e95. I was thinking of e85 as it’s hella cheaper.

Was thinking, get a second gas tank lid, drill a hole and put a hose in it. I already have a fitting out the bottom of the tank but would like to add a 2 way valve. When the stuff started to get stuck I first stuck a screw driver up there. But I had to disconnect the hose and got covered once I cleared it. But later we just blew air in the hose and it cleared it. So with a 2 way I could just swap over, blow it out, swap back and not have to pull the hose.

Now the hose out of the tank should go to a bucket or gas tank…anything that’s sealed. Go over a screen/filter, then gather to be pumped back in. Maybe even a filter in the hose before it goes back in. But this way fumes and getting rid of the waste isn’t such a common thing. Just keep using the same 5 gal of e85.

Yes I know this is complicated and if you are still reading then great! Let’s keep criticism to a min and actually help. Fumes for this thing is horrible, also disposing if the stuff is not fun, so sealed and reusable are the goals.

Thoughts?

Think this with correct fittings, filter, and e85 safe.

Maybe just a cheap fuel pump. E85 compatible. I like how it has a filter, some fuel hose, and a bucket….?

A float switch would be ideal. Something that would give a good range but also not huge like a sump pump.

This model a group is super helpful….but also not at all.

I need to borrow a carb. I will put a deposit I will buy it and return it if you allow it. It will be run off its own fuel so no need for it to get trash in it.

Responses are classic. I have a buddy do you care if he calls. Buddy calls, I don’t have any spares at the moment.

It’s good to have a spare carb….yes, do you have one? Can I borrow it? No reply

The ones who think it’s not the carb, show them the video of it sucking down fuel and they say it’s because it’s running out, they can see it. Yes. Because without the fuel line you wouldn’t be able to see how much fuel it’s using. Focus on how much it’s using instead of it going away.

I finally found a guy semi local who has a bunch but he wants to come down and see it. Great. Let’s do it. But I have such small windows of time and no idea if I will be at said stations. Can I please just come get the carb or pay to have it mailed?!

Saw one on eBay for 200 that’s been tested and works. I’m tempted to get it and be done with it.

Tough call. Might have the old man saddle up for the ride down into town.

I can see it now...

Found a guy in Nebraska that will rebuild my switch and wire and make it as correct as possible for an unrestored build. Sent it out to him today.

Two carbs show up at a guy that rebuilds them, tests them on an engine, then send them off to me. Hopefully that will be the end of the carb story.

Ordered the rubber for the coolant system today and a gas cap for the e85 filter system I’m making.

Denatured alcohol. I couldn’t find e85 so I used e95. With the help of jeff I made a transfer bucket. Used an old 3/s fuel pump, hose, and now it’s all sealed.

It comes out of the tank
Image

Goes into here
Image

I later wired in a switch
Image

This is what came out….you would think it’s magnetic….it’s not. I don’t know what it is. Will rust stop being magnetic once it breaks down so far?

Image

Now I’m going to let it sit for a couple days. Drain it, pump it back in. Wonder how long till the denatured alcohol is still breaking down the sludge for?

Hoses for the water came in, new tested carb will be here Thursday. Need the ignition. Sadly I can’t work on it Saturday as I’m off work.

I’m tempted to go ahead and get the leakless water pump.
